Library News: Documentary screening, book sale

By

The library’s series of Independent Films and Discussion will resume at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 10, with “Before Your Eyes,” an important and critically acclaimed film from Turkey.

Ten-year-old Gulistan and her brother Firat live in the heart of Turkish Kurdistan. Tragedy strikes when their parents are shot down by paramilitary gunmen before their very eyes. Traumatized and orphaned, Gulistan and Firat try to care for their infant sister, but their money soon runs out and they’re forced onto the street. It is there that Gulistan meets the part-time escort Dilara. Accompanying her on a hotel call one day, Gulistan is shocked to discover Dilara’s client is the murderer of her parents, and quickly devises a plan for revenge.

“Before Your Eyes” is 103 minutes in length and is in Turkish and Kurdish, with English subtitles. A short discussion will follow the film.

If book discussion is your preference, the library will offer a new book club beginning on Tuesday, October 2. The “Good Morning Book Club” is an alternative to the longstanding “Friends with Books” group that meets in the evening. Designed for readers more inclined to the sunshine hours, the club will meet on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 in the Trustees Conference Room. The time may be changed if the group so decides. The “Good Morning Book Club” will be led initially by Alice Petrescu, who asks that you come to the “founders meeting” on October 2 at 10:30 a.m. with a short list of titles that you want to recommend for the group. Please let Alice know that you wish to join by emailing her at GoodMorningBookClub@yahoo.com.

The Friends of the Library will hold its 22nd annual Book Sale on Saturday, September 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year, there will be an intermission at 1 p.m. and the sale will resume at 2 p.m. with a “$5 per bag power hour.” Members of the Friends with a current, new, or renewing membership are invited to the Friends’ Book Sale Preview on Friday evening, September 7, from 6-8 p.m.

The Canton library will be closed on Labor Day, Monday, September 3, and September 8 will be our first Saturday open. Normal hours are Mon. 1-9 p.m., Tues.-Thurs. 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Fri.-Sat. 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Visit the library online at town.canton.ma.us/library.
