Donald J. Keefe, 82, of Canton, died Wednesday morning, August 1, 2012, at Epoch of Sharon after a lengthy illness.

A longtime Canton resident, he was born in the Roxbury section of Boston to the late John and Isabelle (McLaughlin) Keefe. Mr. Keefe was raised and educated in Canton, graduating from Canton High School where he had been inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1947 baseball team. An accomplished athlete in school, he also was a member of the football, hockey, and track and field teams.

Spending childhood summers at Newfound Lake in New Hampshire, he continued to visit there with his own family and it later became their seasonal residence.

Mr. Keefe studied business administration at Burdett College and advertising at Harvard University Extension School. He retired from Slattery Bros. in Boston where he had been employed as the warehouse manager for over 30 years.

A proud veteran of the Marine Corps, he served during the Korean War as a staff sergeant in the American Theatre. He was a member of the Canton American Legion, the Canton Town Club, and was an avid sports fan who loved to golf.

Mr. Keefe is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Evelyn A. (Goward) Keefe, of Canton; his daughters, Donna Hoyle and her husband, Edward, and Diane McAuley and her husband, Christopher, of Stoughton; his granddaughters, Meghan Hoyle and Bethany Jerrell and her husband, John; and his great-grandson, Connor Jerrell. He was predeceased by his brothers, John D. Jr. and Charles F. Keefe.

Funeral services in celebration of Donald’s life were held Saturday morning, August 4, at the Roache-Pushard Family Home for Funerals, 210 Sherman Street, followed by a mass of Christian burial in St. Gerard Majella Church. Interment with military honors at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Canton. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to the Canton Veterans’ Department, 801 Washington Street, Canton, MA 02021.
