The Canton 14-year-old American team won the Hockomock Summer Baseball championship by defeating a tough Franklin team 3-2 in Franklin.

Canton pitchers Patrick Vartanian (five innings) and Rob Carmody (two innings) combined to hold Franklin to only two runs. Canton’s first two runs came in the second inning on a two-out single by Griffin Jerrier. Franklin fought back to tie the game up with runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Going into the seventh inning, the score was even at 2-2. With two outs and no one on base, Carmody reached first on a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Vartanian then hit a solid base hit, allowing Carmody to score.

The hosts didn’t go down without a fight, as Franklin’s first three batters reached safely to load the bases in the bottom of the inning. However, Canton’s defense didn’t budge and held on for the exciting win.

Canton had begun its playoff run with an impressive 2-1 win against Stoughton in nine innings. In the semifinal game, the team revenged an earlier regular season loss by defeating Norton 12-4.

In Canton’s inaugural season in the Hockomock Summer Baseball League, they enjoyed a great summer with a regular season record of 9-3.

The players on this year’s team were: John Femia, Griffin Tarmy, Bobby Mullaney, Michael Cammarata, Kevin Powers, Joe Peccia, Vartanian, Carmody, Jerrier, Sean Doyle, Michael Timperio, John Paul Bettinelli, and Ryan Lane.

The team was coached by Mike Jerrier, Lou Tarmy, Brian Femia, and Fred Peccia.

“They really played as a team all season long,” said Manager Mike Jerrier after winning the championship. “Every game seemed to find a new hero. Each and every player’s efforts contributed to a successful season.”
