Baseball team qualifies for playoffs with win over Foxboro

The CHS baseball team punched its ticket to the Division 3 south sectional tournament for the second consecutive year with a thrilling 1-0 win over Foxboro last week. The Bulldogs enter the playoffs with a 4-4 record against D3 opponents.

The 6-12 Bulldogs were due to wrap up the regular season this week with a home game Monday night under the lights at Ruane Field against Stoughton and an away game Wednesday against King Philip in the Hockomock crossover game. The playoffs will likely begin after the Memorial Day weekend.

The winning pitcher in last week’s qualifying win was sophomore Sam Larson, who threw a complete-game gem, giving up just one hit while striking out six batters. The Bulldog defense, which has improved over the season, turned a key double play in the seventh inning.

The lone run in the game was scored in the second inning by Canton’s Jimmy Fitzgerald, who led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.

Fitzgerald also delivered an excellent pitching performance earlier in the week against Bedford in a 1-0 loss. Fitzgerald pitched a complete game; however, the Bulldogs failed to capitalize offensively, stranding 11 runners on base throughout the game. The Bulldogs later fell to Davenport Division leading Oliver Ames last week 10-2.
