Garden Club members to create floral masterpiece

By

Floral arranger Joan Marie Driscoll, owner of Floral Scents in Canton, and assistant arranger Maribel Powell, president of the Canton Garden Club, will represent the Garden Club during Art in Bloom 2012 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. This three-day festival showcasing flower arranging as an art form takes place Saturday to Monday, April 28-30.

Driscoll and Powell will create a flower design that interprets a work of art, one of 50 designs to be done by New England garden clubs in this spectacular springtime tradition.

Driscoll has chosen a “Feather Cape,” an artwork housed in the MFA’s Art of the Americas collection. This pelerine cape, a common fashion accessory of the 1820s, has a rich, textured nature with vibrant iridescent colored bird feathers.

The 36th annual Art in Bloom will begin on Saturday with a Family Day, featuring art-making activities for children and families. A members-only event will follow on Sunday evening, April 29. On Monday, Paula Pryke, one of Britain’s best known floral designers, will present a lecture and floral demonstration and will also conduct two master classes with hands-on floral instruction. All presentations are ticketed events. On Monday evening from 5-9 p.m. there will be a free open house for the public, with live music, entertainment, and spotlight tours.

Other attractions include a ticketed Elegant Tea on Saturday and Sunday, and the “Give the Arts a Chance” drawing, with prizes ranging from jewelry to box seats for the Red Sox. Daily events include The Flower Cart with springtime wares, Art in Bloom at Home, which features free floral demonstrations, Ikebana floral demonstrations, outdoor walking tours, and free gallery tours, which run continuously from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Art in Bloom is free with museum admission. Reservations are required for the Paula Pryke lecture and master classes. Tickets may be purchased at www.mfa.org or by calling 1-800-440-6975. Reservations are also required for the Elegant Tea and can be made by calling 617-369-3582.
