Boys’ hoop team draws Rockland in D3 tourney opener

The Canton High boys’ basketball team received a bye in the preliminary round of the Division 3 south sectional tournament and was due to face Rockland on the road in a first-round matchup on Wednesday, February 29. Canton (10-10) was seeded 13th and Rockland (18-2) was seeded fourth in the 18-team bracket. The winner will play either fifth-seeded Cardinal Spellman or 12th-seeded Ashland in the quarterfinals on Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined.

Girls’ basketball tops Norwood in regular season finale

The CHS girls’ varsity basketball team closed out the regular season on a high note last week, beating Norwood 60-44 on Wednesday to claim the Riley Winter Classic title and improve to 9-11 overall. It was the Bulldogs’ second convincing win in as many games following a recent four-game slide. Senior Olivia Murphy paced the visitors with 25 points, and freshman Eileen Khoury matched her effort against Westwood with 19 points. Senior point guard Alana Pitts-Anaya also played well, scoring 16 points in the win.

The team received the No. 15 seed in the Division 3 south sectional tournament and was due to face No. 2 Fairhaven (18-2) in Fairhaven on Tuesday, February 28. A win over the Blue Devils would propel the Bulldogs into the second round, where they would face either No. 7 Norwell or No. 10 Ursuline Academy on the road Thursday night.

CHS gymnast Josh Klein shines at state meet

Canton High School senior gymnast Josh Klein continued his dominance on the vault last week, finishing third overall at the Mass. Coaches Association Individual Gymnastic Championships with an outstanding score of 9.525. Klein also recently won the Hockomock League title with a score of 9.45.

Friends of Canton Football to host ‘Pub Night’ March 23

Friends of Canton Football will hold their annual “Pub Night” on Friday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the Canton Town Club. This is the association’s largest fundraiser, with proceeds going to support the newly revived middle school football program. The night will focus on the CHS football teams from 1984-1993 as well as the 25th anniversary of the 1987 Super Bowl team. Former head coach Frank Tricomi will attend along with his former assistant coaches and many former players of that era. The night will include food, raffles, music and DVD highlights, as well as a few awards. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Men’s Over-30 Softball League looking for teams

The Canton Men’s Over-30 Softball League is looking for more teams. The league usually plays its games on Sunday mornings. For more information, email Ted Lehan at tedl7441@gmail.com.
