BOS announces investigation into Rec. Dept. finances

By

Editor’s note: The following press release was submitted by the Board of Selectmen regarding an ongoing investigation into financial activities at the Recreation Department. The matter has since been referred to the Public Integrity Division of the Attorney General’s Office, which investigates and prosecutes serious criminal misconduct involving public agencies and their employees.

In conjunction with the Canton Police Department, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Canton Recreation Commission, the Board of Selectmen is continuing its review of financial irregularities brought to the board’s attention after commissioning and completing an independent audit of the Recreation Department revolving fund. This fund supports various recreation programs and services provided by the Recreation Department to the community.

As a result of this review, one person’s relationship with the Recreation Department has been ended, and two Recreation Department office employees have been placed on administrative leave as of Friday, February 3, pending the results of this review and the conclusion of possible personnel administrative procedures scheduled to take place on or about the week of February 20.

The Board of Selectmen has authorized temporary contingency Recreation Department staffing to be put in place to ensure the continuity of department services and operations. Specifically, selectmen have named Joseph Mulvey as the temporary, full-time recreation director and have also hired Beverly Hagen and Judith Kincaide to serve as temporary, part-time secretaries. It is expected that any required personnel administrative procedures will be concluded by the end of February.

The goal of the board is to ensure the completion of a thorough, expeditious and fair review and to provide the public with timely and accurate information as soon as possible.

Those with questions about the investigation should contact the Canton Police Department at 781-821-5090, ext. 101.
