NepRWA looking for Beetle Ranchers

By

The Neponset River Watershed Association and its project partner, the south region of the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, would like to invite local residents to participate in a very special program this spring. Help protect local biodiversity by being a Beetle Rancher — grow Galerucella beetles at home!

Beetle Ranchers prepare rootballs for potting.

By raising Galerucella beetles and then releasing them at two special sites, you will help to boost native plant and animal diversity in wetlands along the Neponset River. Because the beetles feed only on exotic, invasive purple loosestrife, they help to control the weed and restore habitat for native species.

To be a Beetle Rancher, you should meet three criteria: You must have a very sunny yard with space for a kiddie pool; a nearby garden hose; and availability from March through mid August to participate in project activities. Individuals, families, classes, and groups are welcome.

Learn more about Beetle Ranching at www.neponset.org. Sign up to be a Beetle Rancher by contacting Carly Rocklen at the Neponset River Watershed Association at 781-575-0354, ext. 303, or rocklen@neponset.org.

For a taste of Beetle Ranching, catch the Curious George children’s television show on WGBH/PBS on February 22-23. The “Feeling Antsy” episode will feature young Neponset Beetle Ranchers! For show times, visit www.wgbh.org/programs/Curious-George-61. View photos from the Curious George film shoot at www.flickr.com/photos/neprwa/sets/72157629259048137.
