Gymnasts lose heartbreaker to North Attleboro

In a heartbreaking loss last Monday, the Canton High gymnastics team fell to the North Attleboro Red Rocketeers 125.4-124.2. Senior captain Becca Pulcini’s return, along with great performances by Josh Klein, Abby Greene and many others, unfortunately was not enough to edge out the competition.

According to head coach Carla King, the Bulldogs had an “extremely off-day on the beam.” She added that the loss was a particularly tough one, “knowing that if we stayed on the beam we would have won.” This, along with freshman Alec Terenzio’s absence due to injury, made the difference in the squad’s ultimate defeat.

While Terenzio’s absence was certainly felt, Pulcini made her return known in all events except for the vault. She put in solid performances on the bars and beam and stood out on the floor with a score of 8.6, a “great score for her first meet of the season after injury,” according to King.

Klein continues to be a huge asset for the Bulldogs. His vault score of 8.9 and season-high score of 8.3 on his floor routine demonstrate his skills.

Even though the beam proved to be the low point of the meet, freshman Greene earned a season-high 8.8 in that event. Another highlight of the night was freshman Erin Proctor’s performance on the bars. She has shown notable improvement over the course of the season, and her 7.2 against the Rocketeers was an example of that progress.

With only two meets left in the season, Coach King remains optimistic. “I just hope that there will be at least one meet where everyone is healthy enough to compete so we reach the team’s full potential,” she said.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to face Attleboro on the road on Tuesday and will host Braintree next Tuesday.
