Green Team Auxiliary announces photo contest

Here’s your chance to shoot and show your best green shots in the Canton Citizen. Submit original photos that demonstrate energy conservation and environmental preservation in novel and ingenious ways. Email your best green shots to Canton’s Green Team Auxiliary at greenteamaux@gmail.com. Then watch this newspaper to learn whether one or more of your photos is among the winners chosen by the panel of judges.

Competition begins Thursday, January 5. The Citizen will publish photos periodically, so don’t be disappointed if photos do not appear every week. Judges may need extra time to select winners. Consider including friends or interesting props in your photos to add action, information, pizzazz, or humor. Be creative; be evocative. Encourage smiles and contemplation; convey a sense of warmth and spirit.

Example topics for photos are:

* Urban or natural landscapes

* Weather phenomenon (and maybe the energy these pack)

* Nature (including the natural beauty enhanced by conservation and preservation)

* Depictions of energy use and how to shrink energy costs in schools, homes and buildings around town

* Photos that show how protecting our town’s past through preservation of historical and natural sites enhances our environment, learning, and fun

* Your winning topic demonstrating energy conservation and environmental preservation.

With each submission to the Green Team Auxiliary, provide a brief description of each photo and the names of the individuals (if any) who appear in each photo, as well as the name of the photographer. Include the photographer’s age (or age group) because submissions will be divided into three categories: Elementary, Middle/High School and Adults. Winning photographers will be recognized in the Canton Citizen and will receive a wall calendar featuring winning entries.

Best photos will be selected by the Green Team panel of judges. These include members of the town’s Green Team Auxiliary and Voters for the Preservation of Canton (VPC). The auxiliary is made up of Canton High School students who are promoting adoption of the Stretch Energy Code at the upcoming annual town meeting in April 2012.

The Stretch Energy Code provides for energy efficiency standards that stretch energy usage and shrink energy costs for homeowners, renters, and businesses. If the code is passed, Canton can be designated a prestigious Green Community by the state of Massachusetts and the town can earn grants of approximately $150,000 annually. Last year, Easton received $168,000 and Dedham received $179,800 from the state. Like these and many other cities and towns, Canton would share in millions in state funding annually as a Green Community. Take shots that show us how to “stretch that green.”

Canton’s Green Team is appointed by the Board of Selectmen. The team’s mission is to promote initiatives in clean technologies and related services in such areas as solar, wind, recycling and hydroelectricity, and to seek grants for activities that provide opportunities for job growth and expansion of Canton’s leadership in alternative and renewable energy technologies.

The VPC is campaigning for adoption of the Massachusetts Community Preservation Act (CPA). This proposition will appear on the ballot in the town election scheduled for April 3, 2012. The CPA enables cities and towns in Massachusetts to create a local fund for open space, historic preservation, community housing and outdoor recreation projects. Adoption of the CPA will allow the town of Canton to receive funds each year from the state’s Community Preservation Trust Fund to help underwrite local projects. Canton would receive approximately $452,599 annually following acceptance of the CPA.
