Both indoor track teams beaten by Foxboro
By Mike BergerThe Canton High indoor track teams fell separately to Foxboro last week as the girls’ squad lost by 15 points and the boys’ team lost by five. The girls are looking for their first win while the boys evened their record to 1-1.
Junior Mellyn Costello was a double winner for the girls’ team with victories in the 55-meter dash (8.11 sec.) and 55-meter hurdles (9.7 sec.). She also finished second in the high jump with a best jump of four feet, six inches.
Another double winner was senior Vicky Tondre, who won the 300 in 45.65 seconds and the long jump at just over 17 feet. Other point scorers for the girls included Michaela Kelley, who finished second in the 600 meters in 1:46.8, and Lukesha Joseph and Alexis Njoku, who finished second and third in the shot put, respectively, with throws of 24’4” and 22’5”.
For the boys’ team, senior Cam Huber won the 600 in 1:28.16, and senior Evan Feldman won the long jump at 16 feet, 10 inches. The 4×400 relay team was also victorious, posting a time of 3:45.84 behind Jake Fruci, Obi Nwankwo, Feldman, and Huber.
The Bulldogs also swept the shot put behind junior Shane Nordgren (37’7.25”), senior Julian Malbranche (34’10”), and sophomore Matt Bagley (29’3”). Derek Seto also scored in two events, finishing second in the 55-meter dash in 7.38 seconds and second in the long jump with a jump of 16 feet, eight inches.
Other point scorers for Canton included Nwankwo and Feldman, who finished second and third in the 300 with respective times of 39.79 and 41.25 seconds, and junior Craig Mills, who finished second in the 600 in 1:34.24.
Both teams were due to face Sharon this afternoon, January 5, at Boston University, followed by the Freshmen-Sophomore meet on January 8 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
