Dear Editor:

On November 6, Temple Beth Abraham hosted the 23rd running of the Canton Fall Classic, attracting nearly 600 sign-ups for the 10K, 5K and the kids’ one-mile fun run. This year was particularly challenging as we postponed the race from the week before due to snow. We thank Police Chief Ken Berkowitz for helping us make a tough decision with respect to public safety. The town of Canton has continuously supported the race in terms of attendance, prize support and volunteer support. For full race results, go to www.cantonfallclassic.com or www.racewire.com.

On a sunny morning, the fun run started at 9:45 with a field of 40 being cheered on by the awaiting 5K and 10K runners. The winners of the fun run were both 12 years old: Katie Bradley and Jeffery Bodendorf. The winning times in the 5K with a 5:27 mile pace was Joseph Pike of Keene, NH (16:56) and Katie Churchill of Easton with a 6:10 pace and a 19:12 finish. The fastest times from Canton runners were turned in by Brian Hayes (20:02) and Cassie Wesner (22:08). In the 10K event, David Woodruff of Needham held a 5:28 pace to finish at 36:06 while Framingham’s Randy Stockbridge finished at 40:38. Dueling for first Canton finisher were Michael McDonald and Drew Kemalian Jr. with times of 39:28 and 39:56, respectively.

First- and second-place finishers along with division winners had a choice of a bountiful array of merchandise prizes, including Patriots game tickets, Reebok shoes, restaurant gift certificates and other items generously donated by local merchants along with a small cash purse.

We wish to thank our sponsors — MS Walker, Bank of Canton, Vista-Care Hospice, Industrial Metal Recycling, Shelia Donovan Pilates Studio, Verizon, Independent, the Canton Police Association, Bernotas Realty, Quin, Rickard, Grupp and Alford, American Auto Transporters, Stanetsky Memorial Chapels, Sheldon Cohen Insurance, Republic Plumbing, All Business Communications, HarborOne Credit Union, Dedham Savings, Living the Dream Auto, and Blue Hill Press — for enabling our event to continue, and further establishing the race as one of the south shore’s premier running events. Contributing donors were: Welsh and Parker Insurance Co., Frank Lamparelli Oil, Milton Health Care, the Blue Hill Montessori School, Joe Casey, Alan Goldberg, Beantown Diner and Janet Pratt Realtors. Friends of the race included Ron Michaelson, Garelick Farms, Runners World, Reebok, Draper Labs, Larabar, 5 Hour Energy, Vita Cocoa Water, Pretzel Chips, the Main Course and Marathon Sports.

We could not have put on a race without our great volunteer staff of 60 strong and the generous support of our many patrons. Our sincere thanks and gratitude go out to the following local businesses: Anton’s Cleaners, Aluna SkinCare, Bertucci’s, Big Y Supermarket, Canton Sports Pub, The Butcherie, Canton Cleaners, Cheng-Du, Chinatown, Canton Wine and Spirits, Canton Discount Liquors, Centerfields, David’s Tire, Dennino’s Pizza, Foley’s Backstreet Grille, Frank and Vinnie’s Barber Shop, Fresh City, Golden China, Halfway Café, Helen’s Hair Styling, Home Theater Concepts, Luciano’s, Legal Seafoods, Jags Auto, Jake and Joes Restaurant, Kramer Jewelers, Lastoria Restaurant, Last Shot Sports Bar, Maxie’s Deli, Milano, New England Pottery, New England Runner, Not Your Average Joe’s, Mandarin Taste, Paula’s Package Store, Pastene, Roche Bros.
