The 2011 Ivy League Rugby Sevens tournament will be held at the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton on Saturday, November 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Brown University, the reigning Ivy League champion, will look to defend its title against national champion Dartmouth and the other six teams in the Ivy League.

Representing Canton at the tournament will be 2010 Canton High graduate Ethan Winchell, who plays for the Harvard team, along with Harvard head coach David Gonzales, who teaches physical education at Canton High School.

Rugby sevens is a side version of the sport made up of seven players per side instead of the traditional 15. Requiring vast amounts of speed and athleticism, sevens has earned a place at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

While rugby remains a niche sport in the United States, the recent World Cup held in New Zealand was viewed by over a billion fans.

The event will be sponsored by Boathouse Sports, Royal Lyme, and the Boston Irish Wolfhounds. Admission is $5, and tickets can be purchased at the gate. The Irish Cultural Centre is located at 200 New Boston Drive (off Rte. 138) in Canton.

Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale will all be in attendance and fielding their top sides.
