For the first time in seven years, the Canton High School golf team has captured the league title, beating out nine other teams in last week’s Hockomock League Championship tournament at Granite Links in Quincy.

Sophomore Sam Riemer also advanced to the state golf championships after finishing 12th overall among 120 golfers in the Division 3 south individual tournament, held last Monday at South Shore Country Club.

As a team, the Bulldogs finished fifth overall among 18 teams, just missing the cutoff to advance to the D3 golf championships.

In addition, two CHS golfers were named to the league all-star team: Riemer and senior Mike Lamir.

This season was certainly one to remember as the Bulldogs finished 8-5 in the Davenport Division and had several big wins, including victories over the top two teams in both the Kelly-Rex Division (King Philip) and the Davenport Division (Sharon).

“We proved during the season we were as good as anyone in the league,” said Spillane. “The great thing about [the league meet] is everyone sends their best three golfers and everyone plays 18 holes on the same course. We proved we are the best team in the league.”

Canton had the lowest team score at 242, followed by Sharon at 243 and Franklin at 244. All three Canton golfers shined on the par-72 course, led by senior Mike Reardon with a team-best score of 80. Lamir and Riemer were right behind with identical scores of 81.

Reardon had the fifth-lowest score of the tournament to cap off an excellent golfing career at CHS. Lamir also went out on a high note, while Riemer showed his potential as one of the best golfers in the league, according to Spillane.

In the Division 3 sectional tournament, the top four scores counted for each of the 18 teams. Canton finished with 328 points, just eight strokes behind fourth-place Hopkinton for the final qualifying spot.

Three of the top four scorers for Canton were sophomores, showing the overall talent and opportunity for the Bulldogs in the years to come.

Riemer continued his fine play with a 79, and Lamir shot an 80 to finish within one stroke of reaching the state finals. Rounding out the top four were sophomores Brian Brooks (84) and Sam Hrubeck (85).
