Man About Canton: Comedian Bill Burr

Comedian Bill Burr, brother of Canton Selectman Bob Burr, recently performed at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston. According to the Boston Globe, the Canton native has been one of the more prolific and consistently hilarious voices in comedy over the past few years. Bill will now reprise his role as “hard hat guy” on the blockbuster AMC hit series “Breaking Bad.” His shows at the Wilbur Theatre were sold out.

Drivers beware: The state’s highest court has upheld a law that requires motorists to pay a $25 fee to appeal a civil traffic infraction to a clerk magistrate and a $50 fee to appeal to a judge. Civil traffic infractions include traffic tickets and parking tickets.

At 65 years old, Canton resident John Forger was the oldest contestant on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” which began its 12th season on September 20. Forger, at 6 feet tall, weighed in at 328 pounds. The theme for the show’s 12th season is “Battle of the Ages.” Unfortunately, John was voted off on the second episode, but he did weigh in at 269 during his transformation sequence at the end of that episode — a loss of 59 pounds. Weigh to go, John!

Canton selectmen recently appointed Adrienne Tierney of Canton as the town’s accounting coordinator of payroll.

A Canton developer is looking to raze an existing three-family dwelling and erect seven residential units on property located at 41 Plymouth Street, off Wall Street. The Canton Board of Appeals will make a decision on the petition.

Construction on Route 138 between Washington and Randolph streets is finally completed. It was a fine job, but it took four years.

New Human Resources Administrator Jody Middleton’s starting salary was set at $73,000 per year.

It cost an estimated $500,000 to repair the damaged culverts on Pine Street and on Bolivar Street, according to Selectmen Chairman John Connolly.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 13.8 percent of the population in Massachusetts is over the age of 65. In the town of Canton, it is 17 percent, one of the highest percentages in the state.

It is interesting to note that the average monthly retiree’s Social Security benefit for 2011 is about $1,180. For 64 percent of Americans ages 65 and older, Social Security provides more than half of their income.

Artificial sweeteners, like aspartame and sucralose, are about 180 times sweeter than regular sugar. According to a recent study, diet sodas are almost as bad for you as regular sodas.

According to Obamacare legislation, the per-person Medicare insurance premium will increase from the present monthly fee of $96.40 to $104.20 in 2012; $120.20 in 2013; and — are you ready for this? — $247 in 2014. That is over a 100 percent increase.

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 permits parents to cover dependents up to their 26th birthday. Before that measure took effect, children were dropped off their parents’ family policies at 18 or 21 or whenever they left college.

Halfway Café won the Canton Men’s Softball League Championship by beating defending champion Hannington’s 9-7 in the deciding seventh game in the best-of-seven finals. Halfway (15-5) was seeded third while Hannington’s (14-6) was seeded fourth. Hannington’s upset top-seeded Canton Junction Sports Bar (18-2), while Halfway Café beat second-seeded Golden China (16-4) to set up the final series. It was the first series to go seven games since 1985.

The Canton American Legion won the Canton Over-30 League Championship, while Hannington’s of Canton won the Eastern Massachusetts 50 and Over Playoff Championship.
