Hats off to Tanya Willow

By

Dear Editor:

Hats off to Tanya Willow on her debut column, “Outside the Whale,” in last week’s Canton Citizen. Bold and inspiring, her words are truly refreshing in today’s society in which ennui, inertia and self-preservation oftentimes prevail.

I recently saw on television the results of a poll in which the majority of college-age Americans can identify Kim Kardashian over Joe Biden. In full disclosure, I cannot recall the source of the poll, but it underscored for me, at least, an increasing trend toward apathy and — dare I say it — ignorance. Is Hollywood now more important than government? More influential, perhaps.

Political correctness and conformity seems to have put a filter on the mainstream media. How sad it is to live in a world where challenging the “norm” can result in censorship and fear.

Tanya Willow hit the mark with her unabashed support of critical thinking. I proudly worked as a reporter and columnist at the Canton Citizen for several years, and I applaud the paper’s editor-in-chief, Beth Erickson, for her integrity in printing all points of view.

Congratulations, Tanya. I am looking forward to your future columns.
