Legion wins over-30 softball title

American Legion beat the Fire Department 16-9 to win the Canton Men’s Over-30 Softball League championship.

Two weeks ago, Schneiders — the No. 1 seed and two-time defending champs — were bounced from the playoffs after falling to both the Legion (19-18) and the Fire Department (16-13) in consecutive games, thus paving the way for a new champion to be crowned this year.

That honor now belongs to the Legion team, which got an excellent pitching performance from John Bires in the deciding game against the Fire Department.

Canton Men’s Softball League Playoff Update

The 2011 Canton Men’s Softball League season is down to the final games of the semifinals, with Halfway Café holding a 2-0 edge over Golden China and Hannington’s tied up with Canton Junction at one win apiece. The semifinals are a best-of-five format. Field conditions permitting, the semifinals should be in the books by Thursday (today) with the best-of-seven final series beginning soon thereafter.

In semifinal action last week, Halfway Café topped Golden China 12-2 in the first game and then eked out another victory in a game 2 slugfest 22-21.

Junction edged Hannington’s 9-8 in game 1 of the other series, but Hannington’s came back to tie the series with a 10-8 win. If necessary, Junction will play Hannington’s today at Devoll Field to decide the series.

Canton Women’s Softball League Playoff Update

In recent action in the Canton Women’s Softball League, BZ & Co. beat Alamo 13-12, Golden China beat American Legion 11-10, Dockray beat New Turnpike 8-2, and Appraisal’s beat KT’s 13-6.

The next round of the playoffs was due to be played on Wednesday, August 31, with Appraisal’s taking on Golden China, American Legion facing Dockray, and KT’s facing BZ.
