MAC: Too Many Condos and Apartments

At over 22 percent, Canton has one of the highest percentages in the south shore of condos, apartments, and multi-family homes. Stoughton is close to 25 percent, while Sharon is less than 10 percent. The state average is 11.8 percent.

Oklahoma now has the country’s highest monthly average temperature ever recorded. According to its weather bureau, the state’s average temperature in July was 89.1 degrees. In Texas, since January, only six inches of rain has fallen, making it the most severe one-year drought on record.

Justin Donahue and Patrick Tomasello were named this year’s regular season MVPs in the Canton Men’s Softball League. The pair led the Canton Junction Sports Grill to the top spot in the men’s league with an 18-1 record.

The Canton Hannington Thunder over-50 team took first place in the EMass Senior Softball League with 22 wins and only four losses. The team was led by managers Richie Morganelli and Steve Block, and players Ron Kenyon, Billy Curry and Jimmy Igo.

The Canton High School football field is under consideration as one of the sites for the Eastern Massachusetts high school football playoffs scheduled for Tuesday, November 29, 2011. CHS is under consideration because it has a turf field.

Canton-based Dunkin’ Brands, which raised over $420 million in its initial public stock offering, plans to expand in the United States, expecting its franchises to open between 200 and 250 new outlets in 2011 and 2012. The company will also look to expand overseas and will boost sales by adding products outside of its breakfast menu.

Justin Bieber is Hollywood’s richest teenager, according to People Magazine. Bieber pulled in a reported $53 million last year. Former No. 1 Miley Cyrus dropped to the second spot, earning $48 million last year.

The landscaping in front of the Canton Post Office, as one Canton observer put it, “has become quite an embarrassment.”

Former Cantonite John Carroll, the Falmouth Road Race director since it was organized in 1973, retired this year and was replaced by his son, John Carroll III. John Sr. retained one of his customary duties by firing the starting gun for the 10,696 competitors.

Gas prices have dropped over the past three weeks. The average fell to $3.63 per gallon. A year ago, the state average was $2.68 per gallon. MAC has noticed that most Stoughton gas stations are 10 to 15 cents cheaper than Canton gas stations. Why?

Massachusetts is home to 245 farmers’ markets this season. The total number has doubled over the past seven years. It is interesting to note that the number of bay state farms hit a low of 5,800 in 1995 but has climbed to 7,700 today, according to the National Agriculture Statistics Service.

Two of Canton’s neighboring towns, Milton and Sharon, made Money Magazine’s list as two of the best small towns in the country. Milton, which has a population of about 27,000, came in second behind Louisville, Colorado, while Sharon was ranked 11th.

Brianna Trabucco, a junior at Merrimack College, has been named a co-captain of the girls’ volleyball team. The 5’9” Trabucco was a two-time Hockomock League Volleyball MVP and a three-sport captain at Canton High School.

MAC would like to thank the Canton DPW for the fine repaving job they did on the cul-de-sac on Edward Street, which was needed because of a recent water break.

Friends of former Canton resident Richard “Dickie” MacLeod, who died unexpectedly on July 8 at the young age of 42, recently held an event to support an education fund that has been set up for his two children, Jack and Sam. Dickie was the son of the late Dick MacLeod Sr. and Mary (Flood) MacLeod. Donations can be made to the Jack and Sam MacLeod College Fund, P.O. Box 630, Canton, MA 02021.
