Columbia Gas: Call Dig Safe before removing trees or stumps

By

The aftermath of Hurricane Irene will require a lot of work removing downed trees and grinding tree stumps. Columbia Gas of Massachusetts urges residents to call Dig Safe at 811 to have all utilities located before beginning any work.

When trees are downed, their root systems can bring with them underground utility lines, such as a natural gas service. Extreme caution is required when removing or grinding tree stumps. By calling Dig Safe at 811, each utility will locate their underground utilities and clearly mark their facilities. Massachusetts law requires that anyone planning to dig must call Dig Safe at least three full working days before work begins. Dig Safe will notify all utilities to mark the approximate location of underground service lines in the construction area — no cost.

It is important that residents and businesses are aware of the safety purpose of calling Dig Safe.

“Striking an underground utility line while removing downed trees or grinding tree stumps can cause harm to you or those around you, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, and potentially result in fines and repair costs,” said Frank Davis, general manager of operations for Columbia Gas.

Columbia Gas provides natural gas service to 65 cities and towns in Massachusetts, including the town of Canton. Visit Columbia Gas at www.columbiagasma.com.
