Canton athletes impress at Bay State Games

By

A few Canton residents had notable performances at the Bay State Summer Games last week.

On July 7 at Waltham High School, Colby Gavigan, the starting goalkeeper for the CHS boys’ soccer team, collected a shutout in net for the Southeast team in a 0-0 tie against Northeast. Gavigan was also instrumental in Southeast’s 2-1 win over Metro on July 8.

Also on July 8, Haley Gaughan, a multi-sport star at CHS, scored a goal for the Southeast/Coastal girls’ ice hockey team in a 4-0 victory over Metro/Northeast at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro.

Meanwhile, on July 9 at Regis College, Obi Nwankwo had a solid day at the track, finishing seventh in the 200-meter dash and third in the mile run.

Also, another Canton resident not listed last week, Brian Sullivan, a senior at Archbishop Williams in Braintree, will play for the Southeast boys’ basketball team from July 14-18.

And at UMass Boston on July 10, Carolyn (Joyce) Balsbaugh, a 1998 graduate of Canton High, took home a gold medal in weight lifting. She pressed 170 pounds.
