Members of the Canton Fire Department, Canton Police Department and Randolph Fire Department took part in a mock drunk driving accident last week for the junior class at Blue Hills Regional High School in Canton. The school’s resource officer, Canton Police Officer Scott Connor, and retired Canton firefighter Butch King organized the demonstration to show students the dangers and consequences involved with drinking and driving.

The scenario acted out was a head-on collision involving two cars. At fault was a drunk driver whose passenger died due to the accident. In the other car were five students, all in need of medical care and transport to the hospital.

Officers from the Canton Police Department arrived first to the scene and requested the Fire Department to respond for multiple injuries. Canton Fire arrived and began treatment, which involved using the “jaws of life” to access one of the victims. Students portraying the victims were loaded in Canton and Randolph ambulances and transported to the hospital. At the end of the scenario, funeral home representatives came to remove the deceased from the accident scene and the drunk driver was arrested.

The scenario was narrated by Butch King, and at the end Officer Connor discussed with the juniors what they just witnessed and the dangers involved with drinking and driving. The junior prom was held last Friday, May 27.

Organizers of the event would like to thank Roache-Pushard Funeral Home for assisting and providing a hearse, and Interstate Towing for providing and delivering two cars for the accident.
