CHS girls’ track team crowns three champions at Hock league meet

By

The CHS girls’ track team had a great Hockomock League Championship Meet, as the team placed third overall and three members were event champions: junior Vicky Tondre in the 200 meters; senior Chidimma Nwankwo in the shot put; and sophomore Lauren Berman in the mile.

Senior Kate D'Orazio

CHS head coach Ben Mattson said it could be the first time in more than 25 years that the team has had three event champions.

Other placements for the girls’ team included: senior Kate D’Orazio, fifth in the 400 hurdles (with a season-best personal time); sophomore Mellyn Costello, fifth in the 110 hurdles; senior Radiya Buchanan, second in the long jump; and Tondre, second in the long jump.

The 4×100 team of Costello, Buchanan, Tondre and freshman Rachel Campagna were runners-up, with a season-best personal record, and the 4×400 team of Michaela Kelly, Kim McNally, Berman, and D’Orazio placed fifth, also recording a season-best personal time.

“The girls stepped up big time and got something done this past week,” Matson said. “It is another huge step for this program, and we will be looking to build off of it with the Class C meet coming up this Friday at Oliver Ames.”

The following team members will be continuing on to the states: Berman, mile; Buchanan, high and triple jumps; Campagna, 100 meters; Costello, 100-meter hurdles and long jump; D’Orazio, 400-meter hurdles; Nwankwo, shot put and discus; and Tondre, long jump and 200 meters.

Boys’ team results

The boys’ track team finished seventh overall in the league meet, but the Bulldogs were second in the Davenport Division. Head coach Brian Conroy reported that Jon Vaughn placed second in the 100 — in a photo finish — came in fourth in the long jump and was a member of the third-place 4×400 relay.

Tom Kerikas placed third in the 110 hurdles and Matt Sidney placed third in the high jump. Cam Huber placed sixth in the 800 and was on the third-place 4×400 relay team. Chris Boughter and Obi Nwankwo were the other members of the team. Mike Bronstein ran his personal best in the mile and qualified for the states.

Other team members participating in the Class C Meet this week beside Bronstein include: Kerikas, 110 and 400 hurdles; Vaughn, 100 meters; Huber, 800 meters, Chris Haidul, 400 hurdles, Sidney, high jump; Nwankwo, 200 and 400 meters; Boughter, 200 meters and high jump, and Evan Feldman, 200 meters.
