Girls’ lax team beats NA, bows to KP

Sophomore Meghan Lennon led all scorers with six goals in last week's win over North Attleboro.

Heading into the halfway point of the season, the Canton High girls’ lacrosse team finished the week with a mixed bag: an impressive 20-13 win over North Attleboro and a stinging 19-6 loss to King Philip.

The girls played a steady game against NA, scoring 11 goals in the first half and nine in the second.

“We played a very good game from the very beginning,” coach Chris Murtagh said. “We showed good ball control and shooting. The girls were able to look past the goaltender and find the back of the net.”

Meghan Lennon finished the game as the team’s top scorer with six goals. Other scorers included Sarah Healey and Michelle McNeil with four goals apiece and Meaghan McKenna and Emma Compagna each with three goals. But the game wasn’t solely an offensive effort. Senior goalie Michelle Bigot came up with a number of impressive saves, and the trio of Compagna, Sara Civian and Amanda Crowley led the team’s strong defensive performance.

The Bulldogs struggled to showcase the same level of game play against King Philip, one of the big three lacrosse programs in the Hockomock League.

“We were outplayed in every aspect of the game,” Murtagh said.

Goals came from Healey, Lennon and Michelle McNeil, who netted two each. Otherwise, Murtagh said the girls struggled with shooting and ball control, especially coming up with the ball on draws.
