Foxboro capitalizes on Bulldogs’ early mistakes in 44-7 rout

By

The common denominator when the CHS football team visits the home territories of the big Hockomock schools — North Attleboro, Mansfield and Foxboro — is interceptions and fumbles, which translate to huge early deficits and eventually large defeats.

Such was the case Friday night when the Bulldogs traveled to Foxboro and lost 44-7. The Warriors improved to 4-5 while Canton dropped to 0-8-1.

Foxboro scored early and often, capitalizing on Canton mistakes to take a 20-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and 27-0 at the half. The Bulldogs’ only real drive came in the third quarter and ended with a touchdown, while Foxboro scored 17 additional points in the third and fourth quarters.

“We could have done better,” coach Jim Goff said after the game, “but when you have a lot of turnovers, you just dig a big hole for yourselves.”

The Bulldogs were without starting quarterback Ryan Conrad, who sustained a knee injury in the Oliver Ames game. Leading rusher Anthony LaRose was injured in the Foxboro game, but Goff said he will probably be back in action this week.

Goff started Josh Matt at quarterback and turned to Connor McLaughlin in the second half. McLaughlin, a junior, threw a 35-yard pass to receiver Elias Camacho, who rushed for a one-yard touchdown run.

Goff did see some positives in the game, especially in his young linebacking corps of sophomores Connor O’Brien, Shane Nordgren and Justin Rudy. He also singled out the play of McLaughlin at quarterback and the overall performance of Camacho, who also plays cornerback and safety on defense.

The Bulldogs will host 8-1 Mansfield Friday at 7 p.m. The Boston Globe has rated them the fourth best high school football team in the Greater Boston area, behind Everett, Brockton, and Gloucester.
