CHS boys’ soccer trounces Milton 4-1 in first round

The Canton boys’ soccer team trounced Milton 4-1 Monday in a heavy downpour of rain to advance to the quarterfinals of the MIAA Division 2 south sectional tournament.

The Canton offense exploded with three second half goals, two of which came from two Bulldog captains who secured the first round tournament win.

The Bulldogs ended the first half leading 1-0 after a Milton mistake resulted in an own goal.

Canton head coach Danny Erickson believes the momentum shifted in the second half.

“I honestly thought in the second half we showed that we were a very good team and that we could move the ball around and (Milton) didn’t really have any chances,” Erickson said.

With just four minutes into the half, senior captain Igor Perun pounded a shot through several Wildcat defenders for his sixth goal this season. Captain Chris Murray then followed with a left-footed strike from 30 yards out that he blasted over the Milton goalie’s head into the back of the net.

Murray’s goal gave Canton a 3-0 lead and sunk Milton’s season.

“Chris’s goal was tremendous,” said Erickson. “He’s a right-footed player who hit a left-footed bomb. We had a couple of really nice goals”

Senior striker Ramon Ambrosio also found the back of the net in the victory. Ambrosio now has a team-best 16 goals on the season.

Although advancing with a win, Canton struggled to find rhythm early in the first half due to the heavy rain.

“It was hard to do everything tonight,” Erickson said. “I thought (Milton) had the better of the play in the first half. They came out firing and we were just a step off on everything.”

Even after a poorly played first half, Canton secured a 1-0 lead entering halftime and never looked back. The Bulldogs have only trailed once all season and remain undefeated at 14-0-4.

Canton was scheduled to play Hopkinton in the quarterfinal round of the tournament at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night. Canton was looking for revenge as Hopkinton knocked the Bulldogs out of the tournament last year in the semifinals.

“We’re fired up to be able to play them again. They’re a hard-nosed team,” Erickson said.

Canton is ranked No. 2 in the Division 2 south sectional bracket. Sandwich earned the top seed.
