CHS golfers qualify for state tourney

By

The young CHS golf team won five consecutive home matches in ten days, going from 2-5 to 7-5 and qualifying for the state tournament, which was due to begin early this week.

The highlight of last week’s five consecutive wins was a sixth-card victory over Sharon in which freshman Brian Brooks’ 44 was one lower than his Sharon opponent, allowing Canton to come away with a 251-252 win.

With the score tied after the top four golfers, Canton’s fifth golfer Mike Reardon tied his Sharon opponent, and the scores of the sixth golfers determined the winner.

CHS head coach Jim Spillane noted that the scores of his top eight golfers can be vital in any given match.

Against Sharon the top Canton scorer was Glen Kaplan with a 40, followed by Mike Lamir, Rich Nee, and Bryan Gorham, each with 41s.

Kaplan continued his low scoring with a 39 in a 161-177 win over Stoughton. Lamir tied Kaplan with a 39, followed by Reardon at 40 and Gorham with a 43. Par for nine holes at the Blue Hill Country Club is 39.

Canton beat Foxboro 160-166, as Gorham was the low scorer on the day with a 39, followed by Kaplan and Lamir, both with a 40, and Kevin Marchand at 41.

The Bulldogs also had a good day at the Hockomock Individual Tournament, placing third among ten teams. The tournament featured 18 holes at the new Granite Links Golf Course in Quincy where par is 71. Each team sent three golfers. Gorham finished fifth overall with an 82, followed by Lamir, finishing sixth at 83, and Kaplan, seventh, with an 84. Mansfield was the tournament winner with 246 points, followed by Sharon at 248 and Canton with 249.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to finish the season with a home match against Oliver Ames and the state tournament, which starts this week.
