Girls’ soccer team stays hot with big win, tie

By

After a rocky start at the beginning of the season, the Canton High girls’ soccer team continued to bounce back this week with an 8-0 win over Stoughton and a 1-1 tie against Sharon. The girls improved their record to 2-2-1, while they remain unbeaten in the Hockomock League.

The girls came out strong from the beginning of the Stoughton game with sophomore Lauren Berman scoring a goal in the first few minutes. Berman netted three more goals before the game’s end. Other scorers included sophomore Meghan Lennon with two goals and senior Radiya Buchanan and junior Kensey Waterman with one goal apiece.

“It was one of our easier games of the season,” coach Paul Turner admitted. “Still, Stoughton played hard and made the game difficult.”

On Saturday, both the girls’ and boys’ teams hosted Sharon as part of a special doubleheader that also raised over $1,000 for breast cancer research.

Playing in the later game, the girls got off to a solid start, and according to Turner, dominated 75 percent of the game play. Still, the Eagles managed to take a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half.

“We made a couple of mistakes, Sharon scored and then anxiety set in,” Turner said.

The panic was alleviated when Berman scored a goal midway through the second half. Turner said his team still struggles with having the confidence necessary to win games.

“Because of the girls’ strong performance last year, we go into games with a big target on our backs,” Turner said. “We know the teams will be gunning for us, and we need to be confident in our own abilities.”

The girls have improved greatly, however, in creating goal-scoring chances. At the beginning of the season, they struggled in games against Duxbury and Bishop Feehan to create opportunities to score, while they have managed to consistently shoot a dozen shots on goal in games during the past two weeks.

This week, the Bulldogs were scheduled to play Foxboro in an away game on Wednesday, and tomorrow they will host non-league Silver Lake Regional at 5 p.m.
