CHS football update: Bulldogs impress in first scrimmage

By

Despite the first three days of CHS football practice being limited because of a hard rain, several young players had solid performances in the team’s first scrimmage against Archbishop Williams last week.

Canton scored two touchdowns in the game: one on an interception return by Tim Cruise and the other on a touchdown pass caught by Eliot Camacho. Camacho also caught a 50-yard pass from quarterback Josh Matt. Archbishop Williams scored both of its touchdowns on long runs by speedy running back Alex Furtado.

CHS head coach Jim Goff did not use veteran running backs Jon Vaughn and Anthony LaRose, but instead used the opportunity to get a look at Justin Saccone and Anthony Bires, who Goff said was very impressive in his first action in the backfield.

Goff said the team as a whole reported in good physical shape and there were no serious injuries after the first week of practice. The most impressive performance of the week came from the sophomores and juniors on the offensive line, who, despite their inexperience, played very well against Archbishop Williams. Goff singled out Matt Nichols for his line play.

Defensively, Goff said the team substituted freely and looked at a lot of different defensive fronts. He singled out the play of the linebackers, including Ryan Conrad and Matt McLaughlin.

Overall, he said competition in practice has been good as many sophomores and juniors continue to battle for various starting positions — including the quarterback position, where the leading candidates are Matt, Connor McLaughlin, and Ian Slavin.

The Bulldogs had two more scrimmages scheduled for this week: Wednesday at Milton High and Saturday at home against Hanover at 10:30 a.m.
