Legion’s Post 24 baseball team earns first win of season

By

The Canton Post 24 baseball team won its first game Sunday evening 9-6, as Adam Freedman of Sharon clubbed a three-run homerun to beat Westwood 9-6. Dave Zabinsky also had a three-run homerun in the third inning and hit a triple in the fifth to tie the game at 6.

Starting pitcher Joey Wilkinson of Canton pitched four good innings, and reliever Rob McCarty, also of Canton, got the win as he pitched three innings.

The A’s lost a tough game 1-0 against Foxboro Friday night as both teams had only three hits. Dave Roberto pitched the full game and performed well in his second good outing.

Canton lost the game in the sixth inning after giving up a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and then an RBI single that scored the game’s only run. Canton lost its bid to tie the game with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning.

Earlier in the week, Canton (1-3) lost to Dedham 6-5 despite a strong outing by Roberto, who pitched well going into the fifth inning with a 4-3 lead. But Dedham tied the game in the sixth and pushed across the winning run in the seventh inning. Freedman and Matt Bernstein each had two hits in the game. Canton also lost to Norfolk 3-2, spoiling a good pitching performance by Dave Khrakovsky.

The team had pushed across a run when Freedman walked, stole second, advanced to third on a bunt by Roberto, and then came home on an error. The team got the lead in the fourth inning on a single by Canton’s Trevor Boyce, who stole second and third and came home on an infield hit by catcher Chris Puliafico of Sharon.

After the game, Canton head coach Junior Medina said his team has to be more aggressive at the plate and cut down on base-running mistakes. He praised the pitching of Roberto and Khrakovsky and the relief pitching of McCarty, who struck out two batters against Norfolk.

Canton had a busy schedule this week with five games, including two home games against Needham and Medfield June 22-23, a home game against Walpole tomorrow at 6 p.m., and a double header on Sunday at Franklin with games scheduled for 1 and 5 p.m.
