Season ends for girls’ lax

After making it to the postseason, the CHS girls’ lacrosse team lost in the first round of tournament play to Sandwich by a slim margin, 11-10, ending the team’s storied season.

“The girls were very antsy about playing,” coach Chris Murtagh said when describing the team’s mentality leading up to the game. But once the game started, the girls, the tenth seed in the tournament, were able to prove themselves as worthy adversaries to seventh-seeded Sandwich.

Sandwich scored first, but two minutes later the Bulldogs answered with their first goal of the game. With the momentum in Canton’s favor, the girls took control of the lead and were up one goal after the first half. Senior goalie Danielle Dugan made six crucial saves in the first half to help Canton maintain the lead.

“After the first half, the girls thought their chances were changing,” Murtagh said. “We thought we could compete against Sandwich.”

Canton fell in the second half, however, when Sandwich scored three goals, a lead that ultimately proved insurmountable. The Bulldogs did come within one goal of Sandwich’s 11 at the end of the game, and Murtagh said that the girls were headed in the right direction but simply ran out of time.

“The game typified how well our team could play,” Murtagh said. “I think Sandwich expected to be able to run all over us, but we changed their minds quickly.”

Murtagh said Canton was successful in stopping Sandwich’s running game, the team’s hallmark, while also working on ball control and passing. He also commended his players’ ability to remain calm and not panic when they lost the lead in the second half.

Senior captain Ally Boudreau and freshman Meghan Lennon were the team’s top scorers with three goals each.

With 11 players graduating tonight, the team will have to fill a big void next year, but Murtagh said he’s not worried about the team’s future. “This year’s seniors left the girls with the legacy to just be psyched to pick up a stick,” he said. “There’s a real bright future for girls’ lacrosse in Canton.”
