Seven CHS outdoor track team members advance to All-States

Senior Amarachi Njoku’s first-place throw in the shot put was one of several outstanding efforts by members of the CHS outdoor track teams at Saturday’s Class C Sectional Track Championships held at Oliver Ames High School.

Besides Njoku, senior Chidimma Nwankwo (shot put), junior Radiya Buchanan (triple jump), and senior Colleen Healy (400 intermediate hurdles) will be moving on to the All-States this weekend for the girls’ team. Advancing for the boys’ team are Matt Sidney (high jump), senior Christian Bates (mile), and junior Jon Vaughn (110-meter hurdles). The top four finalists in each event advance to the All-States.

The girls’ team finished seventh among 32 teams and the boys finished 10th among 36 teams. Hockomock League opponent Foxboro was the Class C champion in the boys’ division,

Besides her winning throw of 36 feet, six inches in the shot put, Njoku finished third in the discus with a best throw of 101 feet, 11 inches — nine feet away from the winning throw. Nwankwo placed tenth in the discus with a best throw of 92 feet, six inches.

Healy made it to the All-States with a fourth-place finish in the 400 intermediate hurdles at 66.05 seconds. Junior Kate D’Orazio finished close behind in sixth place at 66.92 seconds. Buchanan finished third in the triple jump at 36 feet, 1.25 inches — less than a foot away from the winning jump.

For the boy’s team, Bates and Vaughn had tremendous days. 

Bates finished second overall in the mile at 4:32:08 — eight seconds away from the winning time.

Vaughn placed second in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.35 seconds, less than a second away from the winning time of 14,86 seconds. Vaughn had to run a preliminary race and finished second in that race with an even better time of 15.23 seconds.

Sidney placed fourth in the high jump with a best jump of six feet, two inches, four inches away from the winning height of six feet, six inches.

Other participants from the girls’ team included: junior Anna Amico, 12th, 100-meter dash (preliminaries, 13.13 seconds); and sophomore Vicky Tondre, sixth, 200 meter, 26.75 seconds.

Two girls’ relay teams also participated. The 4×100-meter relay team finished 10th overall behind Amico, junior Molly Phalan, Ashleigh Hicks and Tondre. This relay should be back next year with a sophomore and three juniors comprising the team. The 4×400-meter relay finished 12th behind Buchanan, D’Orazio, Healy and junior Jen Sidney.

For the boys’ team, senior Jordan Guyton finished 13th in the 200-meter race at 23.5 seconds, and junior Jared Hobbs finished eighth in the triple jump at 41 feet. Vaughn finished close behind in the triple jump in 15th place at 31 feet, nine inches.

Three relay teams performed well with the 4×800-meter relay finishing the best with a sixth-place finish. The unit included junior Nikita Amelchenko, sophomores Cam Huber and Matt Kelley, and senior Gautam Madineedi.

The 4×100-meter relay team finished eighth behind junior Alex Cherry, Guyton, Sidney and Vaughn. The 4×400-meter relay team finished 12th behind Bates, junior Chris Boughter, senior Marty Fauche and freshman Obi Nwankwo.
