Baseball team loses three straight

By

The CHS baseball team has fallen on hard times, losing three consecutive games to fall to 1-5 on the season. The Bulldogs were defeated 5-2 by Foxboro, lost a heartbreaker 2-1 to North Attleboro, and fell 6-3 to Stoughton.

The common denominators were a lack of clutch hitting and some subpar defensive play, while Canton pitchers Joey Wilkinson, Matt Hallett and Matt Bernstein pitched well and deserved a better fate.

The best game of the week came in the loss to North Attleboro as Hallett pitched his second consecutive outstanding game, going six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out five.

Canton led 1-0 going into the sixth inning, but Hallett gave up a two-run single to give the Rocketeers the win. Canton scored its run in the third inning on a walk, a sacrifice, and an RBI groundout by Tom Nickle.

The week began with a disappointing loss to Foxboro as four Canton errors led to four unearned runs. Wilkinson pitched the entire game, giving up seven hits while walking one batter. Canton had five hits in all, including two by Wilkinson and one by Hallett.

In the loss to Stoughton, Bernstein carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, but with two outs the Black Knights struck for four unearned runs in a six-run inning set up by a couple of errors, two walks, and a bases-clearing double. Canton came up with two additional runs in the seventh inning, but it was not enough as the Knights held on for the win.

CHS head coach Tom Healy said the team must improve its consistency on defense and hitting, especially hitting in the clutch. The team has only two hitters batting near .300 in Wilkinson and Bernstein, while the next highest batters are well below that mark.

The Bulldogs were hoping to improve their record with two home games this week – Monday versus nonleague Abington and Saturday versus Wayland at 1:30 p.m. Canton will then host King Philip on Monday, April 26, followed by an away game at Mansfield on Wednesday, April 28.
