Track teams perform well but lose opener

By

Both CHS outdoor track teams opened their 2010 campaigns against Mansfield — one of the top powers in the league — and did well but came out on the losing side. The meet was held at the George King Track on April 1.

The boys’ team lost 84-43 but had several athletes earn first place spots. Jon Vaughn was the leading point scorer on the day, taking first place in the 110 hurdles and the long jump. Vaughn was also a member of the winning 4×100 relay team — with Matt Sidney, Jordan Guyton and Marty Fauche — and earned second place in the triple jump. The Bulldogs’ 4×100 team is one of the beat in the league.

Sidney and Guyton also gathered up several points. Sidney won the high jump and placed third in the triple jump, while Guyton won the 200.

Jared Hobbs won the triple jump and placed third in the long jump, and Fauche qualified for the state meet in the 200 and placed second in the long jump.

Other point scorers included Christian Bates, second, 400 hurdles; Frankie Barnes, third, discus; Chris Walker, second, shot put; and Dan Alexander, third, shot put.

Showing considerable improvement were Michael Bronstein in the two mile; Matt Kelly, Cam Huber, Gautam Madineedi and Nikita Amelchenko in the 800; and Alex Lenkei, who cut  two seconds off his 200 time.

Head coach Conor Sheehan reported that the girls’ team received some “great performances” and “never backed down from what is historically a powerhouse in the Hockomock League.”

The team competed without some of its key athletes, including tri-captain Anna Amico.

Vicky Tondre qualified for states in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Chidimma Nwankwo and Amarachi Njoku qualified in the shot put, and Nwankwo also qualified in the discus.

Both teams face a heavy schedule in the next ten days with a home meet scheduled for April 6 against Sharon, followed by another home meet this afternoon (Thursday, April 8) against Franklin, beginning at 3:30 p.m., and an away meet Thursday, April 15 against Oliver Ames.
