CHS Booster Club Sports Swap is this Saturday

Need to do some early spring cleaning? Looking for bargain-priced sports equipment? The Canton High School Booster Club will be holding its first “Sport Swap” this Saturday, March 20, at the CHS cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Booster Club will be collecting “gently worn sports equipment,” like skates, cleats, balls, skis, hockey or lacrosse sticks, bikes, racquets, golf clubs, boogie boards, helmets and free weights to sell at discounted prices. The Booster Club is encouraging people to drop their equipment off at the CHS cafeteria on Friday, March 19 from 3 to 8 p.m., although equipment can still be dropped off on the day of the event.

“Given the tough economic times we live in, we thought that it would be great if we could make sports equipment available to the Canton population in general, and the youth of this town in particular, at significantly reduced prices,” Booster Club President Julie Malloy wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen.

If an item is sold from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the seller will be able to receive 50 percent of the proceeds. After 1 p.m. all items left will be sold at half the sticker price and all proceeds will go to the Booster Club.

Malloy said the event was “conceived of as more of a community service project,” and that while the fundraising aspect is secondary, all money raised will be used to help support CHS athletics.

Using lacrosse as an example, Malloy wrote: “It would be a shame if a young athlete was unable to give this sport a try because of the cost of the helmet, stick and pads. If we can make this equipment available for a mere fraction of the cost, perhaps this individual would be more inclined to participate.”
