On warm summer days, people flock to Crescent Ridge Dairy in Sharon to enjoy the ice cream, quickly filling all the spaces in the parking lot. The dairy’s parking lot will be filled this Saturday, June 8, but not necessarily with people looking for a sweet treat. Instead, Crescent Ridge is hosting its first annual farmer’s market in honor of the dairy’s 81st anniversary. The market will be held all summer and into the fall.

“We’ve been talking about it for a number of years,” said Bob Ward of Ward Communications, which handles marketing and advertising for the dairy. “We want to give local residents a chance to buy local brands and support local vendors.”

Ward cast a large net in finding and selecting local vendors. The first step was to check with other farmer’s markets in the area to see which products were popular with shoppers. Once that step was completed, the circle was widened to increase the variety of products.

Ackermann Maple Farm of Cabot, Vermont, will be at the market, selling bottles of maple syrup. The small business opened in 2013. Since there is no maple farm in the area, Ward wanted to find a business that would provide fresh maple syrup, a perfect complement to the dairy’s ice cream.

Alfalfa Farm Winery in Topsfield and Westport Rivers Winery will sell bottles of their wine, which each winery produces from grapes grown on their land. A number of bakeries will be selling fresh breads and pastries, including Babycakes & Confections of Stowe (cupcakes, brownies and more); Big Sky Bread Bakery & Cafe of Newton (bread and more); and Ever So Humble Pie Company, Inc. of Walpole, which was chosen as one of the five best pie companies in New England by Yankee Magazine.

Plenty of fresh produce will be available from Ward’s Berry Farm of Sharon and Pleasant Valley Gardens of Methuen. Golden Girl Granola of Carlisle will sell its homemade granola. Coutts Specialty Foods of Boxborough will have jars of its preserves based on a family recipe. Earrings, necklaces and other items will be on display through Made With Love: Handmade Jewelry by Shana.

In addition to the ice cream, chocolate milk and homemade lemonade, Crescent Ridge sells its own beef and pork. Ward said the cows and pigs are raised on the farm. Those foods are available to the home delivery customers, and the dairy has opened a small retail space inside the dairy bar that allows walk-in customers to purchase them as well. Beef and pork will also be for sale at the farmer’s market.

The aim of the market is to support good health, sustainable agriculture, open space, and the local economy. “This is the first time that we’re doing this,” Ward said of the market. “We’re showcasing local vendors that residents may not be aware of. They have local fresh products. We’re a local brand. We will have local retailers.”

For a complete list of vendors and links to their websites, go to crescentridgefarmersmarket.com/vendors.html. The Crescent Ridge Farmer’s Market will be held every Saturday beginning June 8 until October 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Crescent Ridge Dairy is located at 355 Bay Road in Sharon.

Bank of Canton has donated $10,000 to the Lt. Peter M. Hansen Elementary School to complete its new playground.

“We are thrilled to have the support of the Bank of Canton with its $10,000 donation,” said Hansen Principal Peter Boucher. “The bank has become a wonderful community partner in education. This donation allowed us to officially finish the project and finalize construction. Every student on Team Hansen will now be able to have specific outdoor adventure play, thanks to the efforts of the Bank of Canton.”

As the enrollment at the school has grown to nearly 500 students, the playground area became too small to accommodate all of them. The school community came together under “Team Hansen” to raise funds for a new playground and outdoor classroom over the past eight months.

Stephen P. Costello, president of Bank of Canton, said, “It is our pleasure to support the Hansen Elementary School and all the volunteers on ‘Team Hansen’ in completing this beautiful new playground. By making a positive impact on the lives of our children, Bank of Canton is helping to build a stronger community.”

Denterlein, a strategic communications firm with a focus on healthcare, professional services, higher education and crisis communications, announced last week that David Falcone of Canton will join the company as a vice president. Falcone currently serves as the director of communications and external affairs for the Office of Massachusetts Senate President Therese Murray.

“David is an outstanding strategic thinker with deep expertise in public policy and communications,” said Geri Denterlein, president of Denterlein. “What’s more, David possesses that special combination of book smarts and street smarts, which will prove invaluable in his work with our clients. We are delighted to add him to our growing team.”

As part of Murray’s senior team, Falcone developed the strategy and managed the message on major legislative initiatives on health care, renewable energy, life sciences, transportation, gaming, education, and economic development.

“David is one of the finest communications professionals in the business and I’ve been lucky to have him as my director of communications for the past six years,” Murray said. “He is a skilled writer, a creative and sensible strategist, and a proven leader. I know he will be very successful moving forward.”

Falcone also oversaw an initiative to bring the office of the Senate President closer to her constituents through responsible and consistent use of social media, including Facebook and Twitter, the official website, e-newsletter and online blog. As the chief spokesperson for the office, Falcone dealt routinely with statewide and national press outlets on complex and contentious issues.

“I am excited to join the team at Denterlein,” Falcone said. “The agency is known for its thoughtful and effective approach to the important issues of our day. For the past six years, Senate President Murray has been a friend and mentor and I have been privileged to be part of her team. I feel fortunate to build upon this knowledge in the next phase of my career at such a highly respected firm. I am looking forward to the challenge.”

Prior to his work in the Senate President’s office, Falcone served as the director of communications for the Norfolk County Sheriff’s office and the deputy press secretary for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office. He began his career in journalism, with stints at both the Boston Herald and Attleboro Sun Chronicle.

“David’s legislative expertise, in addition to his experience with the law enforcement community, will add value to both our longstanding clients and to our crisis communications team,” said Diana Pisciotta, executive vice president of Denterlein and head of the firm’s crisis team.

Falcone lives in Canton with his wife, Lauren Beckham Falcone, and his daughter, Lucy. He is a graduate of Catholic University of America and earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northeastern University.

At a recent meeting at Canton High School, Canton Association of Business and Industry board member Sue Korycansky (left) and CABI Secretary Kristin Draper (right) awarded Principal Derek Folan a donation for the drug awareness program sponsored on March 27 at the high school. The school had invited Chris Herren, a former NBA basketball player, to speak to the students and community about his abyss of drug and alcohol addiction — a sickness that derailed his career and nearly cost him his life before he hit rock-bottom and finally accepted help in the summer of 2008.

As consumers enter the home buying and selling process, they are often interested in the local inventory, or how many homes are on the market. However, in the midst of various national news stories on how the real estate market has fluctuated in recent times, it can be difficult to understand the current state of each local market.

Currently, Canton has approximately 56 single homes and 33 condominiums in market inventory, which is about a four-month supply. The National Association of Realtors reports a balanced market to be a six-month supply of inventory.

This relatively low number reiterates the strong local property demand. We are bucking the national trend as we are in a “seller’s market” in Canton, which means there are more buyers than homes for sale, which gives sellers an advantage to perhaps obtain higher prices for their home.

More than 300 restaurants, supermarkets, bakeries, cafés, chocolate and ice cream shops throughout Massachusetts will participate in the upcoming fundraiser, including the Chubby Chickpea in Canton.

Bakes for Breast Cancer will contribute 80 percent of proceeds to breast cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer was founded in 2000 by Carol Brownman Sneider in memory of her mother, Eva Brownman, who lost her battle with breast cancer. Since its inception the event has raised more than $650,000 for breast cancer research and care at Dana-Farber through the Eva Brownman Research Fund currently under the direction of Eric Winer, MD, director of the Breast Oncology Center and the Thompson Senior Investigator in Breast Cancer Research at the Susan F. Smith Center for Women’s Cancers at Dana-Farber.

“Breast cancer is an extraordinarily complex disease that, in spite of the many clinical and scientific advances we’ve made in the past decade, will likely take the lives of 40,000 people in the United States this year,” said Winer. “The funds raised by Boston Bakes will enable us to continue our research to better understand both the causes and the many subtypes of breast cancer, which will help us to devise more effective treatments.”

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt in Canton will hold a festival at its Cobb’s Corner location on Saturday, April 27, to raise money for Canton Little League and Girls Fast Pitch Softball to assist them in special projects, including constructing a new dugout at Duggan Field, erecting a new snack bar and restrooms at the Sullivan/Crawford fields (behind the Kennedy School), and purchasing defibrillators for all fields.

The festival will run from 1-5 p.m. and will feature live performances by several local bands on an outdoor stage, as well as face painters, balloon artists, and a special appearance by several of the New England Patriots cheerleaders, with a photo opportunity and autographs and none other than Pat Patriot himself!

The Canton Orange Leaf will donate 10 percent of all sales for the day to the two organizations, and no coupon is needed.

“Orange Leaf is a community-driven brand that loves to promote fun, and we wanted to do something to celebrate the spring season and to help raise money for a local great all-American cause,” said Gerry Pelissier, franchise owner of Orange Leaf in Canton. “When we heard that there are over 700 children involved in playing this great American pastime sport in our backyard and they needed help to build a snack bar as well as to purchase defibrillators, we knew we had to get involved in a big way. We love giving back to the community because they are so good to us.”

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt is a self-serve, choose-your-own-toppings frozen dessert chain with more than 200 locations from coast to coast. For more information, visit www.orangeleafyogurt.com, like Orange Leaf Yogurt on Facebook or follow them on Twitter @myorangeleaf.

Pat Rooney Gallahue became a business owner in the classic fashion: She liked the product so much that she bought the company. Last July, the Canton native took over The Write Way, a business that specializes in wedding and party invitations, note cards, and other paper products.

Pat Gallahue

Margaret Davidi of Sharon was the original owner and ran the business from the basement of her home. Many families ordered invitations for their children’s bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies from Davidi and later returned to order invitations for those grown children’s weddings. Gallahue met Davidi and became friends with her when she began to buy note cards and small gifts from The Write Way nearly 30 years ago.

When Davidi decided to retire, she called Gallahue to see if her daughter might be interested in buying the business. She wasn’t, but Gallahue’s husband, Jeff, came up with a different idea.

“Three days later, he said to me, ‘Why don’t you think about it?” Gallahue said.

Within months, Gallahue was running her own business. She kept the name The Write Way and bought the phone number that Davidi had used.

Clients call Gallahue to set up an appointment and then meet with her in an office she has created in her home. The walls are lined with shelves that hold dozens of albums filled with sample invitations, announcement cards, and personalized napkins.

Gallahue likes to talk to clients first to get a sense of what they’re looking for. If the clients are an engaged couple, for example, Gallahue will then bring them over to a table near one of the office windows and have them go through albums, bookmarking what they like. After some 30 minutes, she asks them to go back and try to prioritize what they want to consider and eliminate what they don’t like. She enjoys working with her clients and helping with the details of important celebrations.

“It’s very gratifying,” she said, “to find and to assist in choosing an invitation for a family on any special occasion and know that I helped them make the invitation as perfect as it can be.”

For clients who want their invitations addressed in calligraphy style, Gallahue works with two women who address the envelopes for $2 per invitation, a more affordable price than what Gallahue says a Boston-area hotel wedding planner may charge.

Gallahue stocks sample invitations for weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, wedding anniversaries, bridal and baby showers, and other social occasions. She also carries personal note paper, baby announcements, personal address stamps, personalized gift bags for wine bottles, and personalized napkins for parties.

She plans to add non-paper items, such as personalized serving bowls and baby blankets to her line of merchandise. There is a 20 percent discount on invitations ordered through The Write Way, except for sale items.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Gallahue said of her first year with The Write Way, “because it’s all happy fun. Families are celebrating.”

The Write Way is located at 5 Lehan Street in Canton. Gallahue sees clients by appointment seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 781-828-6893 or 781-784-5314.

Foley’s Backstreet Grille in Stoughton is adding a new fundraiser to its list of good causes. The inaugural Foley’s Backstreet Grille 5K Road Race will be held Sunday, April 21, to benefit the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton. Giving back to the community is something that restaurant owner Dave Foley, a Canton native, has done for many years.

Karen and Dave Foley

Twenty years ago, Foley was the chef and general manager of the Corrib Pub in West Roxbury. He was instrumental in starting the Corrib Charitable Trust 5K Road Race, which has raised a million dollars to help local youth organizations and charities. When he and his wife, Karen, opened the Backstreet Grille, they continued the tradition of giving back.

“We’ve been doing it for a long time,” he said. “Every year we try to spread more around.”

Foley’s association with the Mass. Hospital School came about through a very personal connection: the late Matthew Christian, a Canton native who passed away four years ago at the age of 25.

“Matty Christian was a very close friend of my youngest son,” Foley said. “I’ve known him since he was a little kid.”

Christian attended the Canton Public Schools but did his athletic training at MHS — and in the summer of 2009 the school dedicated the “Matt Christian Waterfront” at Reservoir Pond in his honor. Foley believes that Christian’s involvement with MHS helped to make people more aware of the school and what it provides for young people.

Foley chose April 21 as the date of the fist Foley’s 5K because it is the first Sunday after the Boston Marathon. He plans to hold future races on that same day. The race, which will begin at noon, will start and finish at the Mass. Hospital School. Registration is $20 before April 21 and $25 the day of the race. A post-race party will start immediately after the race. The first 500 people who register will receive a free t-shirt. So far, 150 runners have registered.

The road race is the second fundraiser that Foley’s has held to raise money for MHS. Last spring they held the first annual Backstreet Open Golf Tournament. This year’s golf tournament will be held Monday, May 6, at the Easton Country Club, with check-in starting at 8 a.m. The fee is $125 per person or $500 for a team of four. The tournament is a Florida-style format with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. An awards banquet will be held at the restaurant following the tournament. Some 65 golfers took part last year and Foley is hoping to see over 100 people this year.

“It’s really a fun time,” Foley said. Proceeds from both the race and golf tournament will be donated to the general athletic fund at MHS and to help pay the cost of the school’s annual trip to Disney World for members of the MHS senior class.

Foley’s Backstreet Grille has donated to many local schools, temples, churches and youth groups, and has helped other organizations. During the last two years, for example, the percentage of one evening’s sales were donated to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, based on customer Stuart Weiner’s suggestion.

LA Fitness of Stoughton recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of its grand opening. Timberline Construction, a general contractor based in Canton and serving ten sectors, completed the new high-end, modern, 45,000-square-foot sports club designed by Studio 222 of Chicago.

LA Fitness of Stoughton

The facility is a structural steel-framed building with an EFIS exterior, high ceilings, and an open floor plan interior with amenities such as a basketball court, five racquetball courts, administrative space, multiple weight areas, exercise class room, spin studio, and a second level for cardio equipment, each with an LCD television. The club also features high-end locker rooms with saunas, a 75-foot heated indoor pool with hot tub, a day-care and juice bar with seating. The juice bar also offers breakfast, sandwiches, salads, shakes, protein snack options and sports gear. The club provides various classes throughout the week and personal training packages are available.

Timberline was also the general contractor for Canton’s first hotel project, Homewood Suites by Hilton, which opened in December 2011. The design of the new 98-unit, 80,000-square-foot hotel is the work of Archetype Architects of Maine and features high-end finishes. The four-story, open floor plan lobby features an indoor swimming pool with spa, exercise room, laundry room, a business center, as well as dining and sitting areas with gas fireplaces. The units are a combination of studio, one- and two-bedroom suites, each with a kitchen and sitting area.

Timberline Construction also self-performed much of the site work and carpentry using local labor. The project is the seventh Homewood Suites in Buffalo Lodging Associates’ portfolio. In addition to Homewood Suites, Buffalo Lodging operates other Hilton franchised brands along with a variety of Marriott hotels.

In 2002 Steven P. Kelly took over Timberline, then a small firm established in the telecommunications construction industry. In the last ten years, technology has significantly evolved and has changed the demands on businesses and the construction industry. Timberline’s wireless division has continued to grow to meet the new data, text and voice communication needs and serves the major wireless carriers, including Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T. The company was involved in the complex multi-carrier Distributed Antenna System (DAS) installation within the Central Artery tunnel to eliminate service interruptions. Additionally, Timberline’s 24-hour emergency response teams work around the clock during the major storms to repair and help maintain service.

Not long after Kelly invested in Timberline, he launched a General Contracting Division, strategically creating a diverse portfolio with an additional nine sectors: healthcare, academic, data center, corporate, retail, supermarket, restaurant, hospitality, and multi-unit residential.

In the last year, Timberline has completed projects for clients including Hyatt Regency Boston, The Forsyth Institute, UMass Memorial Medical Center, Fresenius Medical, Corinthian Yacht Club, CVS Pharmacy, Harpoon Brewery, GE Aviation, Starbucks, Stop & Shop, Hannaford and Chipotle. Some of Timberline’s current projects include the new Legal Seafoods in Hingham, Charlotte Russe stores, Savers Norwood, Infiniti Norwood, and Lexus of Norwell.

This week also marks the one-year anniversary of Timberline’s new website launch. In the years to come, the company will continue to grow smart and invest in technology, talent and internal team building, as well as client service and marketing communications programs.
