News Notes: Busy week for Canton firefighters

By

The Canton Fire Department saw an uptick in activity last week (July 15-21) as they responded to 112 service calls — above the normal range of 80-90 calls per week. Fire Lt. Tom Norton said that while firefighters were busy, no calls were heat related. Of note was a mutual aid call on Thursday, July 18, at 5 a.m. in which Canton firefighters responded to a multi-floor apartment building fire in Stoughton. Crews initially assisted with water supply and fire suppression and then were reassigned to the roof with Sharon firefighters for building ventilation. Canton crews remained on scene until 8 a.m.

CAASA News: Virtual drop-in center plans progress

Police Chief Ken Berkowitz, chairman of the Canton Alliance Against Substance Abuse, said plans for a web-based, 24/7 drop-in center have progressed as CAASA members met with the web designer last week and have announced a goal of opening the site by the middle of September. Rather than hosting a physical drop-in center once or twice a month, CAASA has decided to offer a virtual center where those seeking assistance or resources could have instant access.

In other news, Canton EMS Coordinator Kevin Hurley reported no substance abuse calls for the week of July 15-21. Hurley said the CFD did respond to a call earlier this month in which the victim, a 71-year-old female, was treated with Narcan.
