Man About Canton: Health Cost Savings

Canton selectmen recently announced that health insurance cost savings reached $380,000 this past year. They have distributed the savings with $200,000 going toward potential rubbish and recycling costs; $100,000 to the School Department’s operating budget; and $30,000 towards the town’s obligation for retired town employees’ health coverage. The remaining $50,000 will be set aside to help pay for any unforeseen future health insurance costs.

State Representative Bill Galvin (D-Canton) filed several successful amendments to the state budget for fiscal year 2020, which include the following: $500,000 for Canton’s Metropolis Rink project; $100,000 for the operation of the Blue Hill Observatory and Science Center; $100,000 for the Norfolk County Fire and Rescue Dispatch; and $150,000 for the Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children’s summer program.

According to Canton Recreation Director Liz Francis, last summer, the Canton pool served over 5,000 swimmers, including more than 200 members of the Canton Dolphins swim team.

According to the Boston Globe, only approximately 54 percent of people between the ages of 75 and 84 in the middle-income group — those with the ability to draw on $25,000 to $74,000 per year from savings and investments — will be able to meet the estimated annual cost of $60,000 for assisted-living rent and other expenses.

Residents of Massachusetts spent $737.01 per capita on lottery tickets in 2017, which is by far the most spent per capita than any other state. Massachusetts beat out second-place Rhode Island by over $200. The average American spent $219.54 per capita on lottery tickets in 2017.

The Canton A’s amateur baseball team’s head coach is Andrew Poliferno.

The Canton American Legion Post 24 baseball team’s coach is Richard Jasmin with program veteran Walter Mann serving as assistant coach. Last year, the team won the league with a very impressive record of 16-6-1 and advanced to the District 6 semifinals. This year’s squad returned to the playoffs but were eliminated over the weekend with a 5-4 loss to Walpole.

The Boston Irish Festival will hold a 5K road race on Sunday, September 8, at 11:30 a.m. at the Irish Cultural Centre at 200 New Boston Drive (off Route 138) in Canton.

The Simoni Foundation recently donated $10,000 to help pay for interpretive signage at the Paul Revere Heritage Site. The signs will be ready by the time the new restaurant opens in September.

The chairman of the Canton Board of Selectmen is Chris Connolly, and the vice chairman is John Connolly.

The Massachusetts state gas tax is 26.5 cents per gallon. Pennsylvania is the highest in the United States at 58.7 cents per gallon.

The average cost of a gallon of gasoline in Massachusetts has been decreasing and is currently $2.70 per gallon. Prices are dropping due to cheaper crude oil, while at the same time U.S. supply is keeping pace with demand.

The Canton High School Class of 2019 graduated 231 students. The class valedictorian was Brandon Pho; the salutatorian was Michael Mazzola; and the class president was Haley Donovan.

Selectmen and the AFSCME union, which covers employees of the DPW, Recreation Department, and 10 other office workers, agreed to a new three-year contract that calls for 2.5 percent wage increases in each of the first two years and a 3 percent increase in the third year.

After 76 years, bleachers will be installed on the visitor side at Memorial Field.
