CHS Unified hoop team enjoys ‘incredible’ season

By

The following recap appears in our annual fall sports wrap-up that was included with this week’s Canton Citizen.

It was another successful fall season for the Canton High Unified basketball program as the Bulldogs went unbeaten in the Hockomock League for a second straight year.

Pioneered by Special Olympics, Unified programs bring students with and without disabilities together through education and sports. In 2015, CHS piloted a Unified track and field team, and a Unified basketball team was added in the fall of 2016.

This year’s basketball squad had an “incredible season,” according to head coach Shanna Belenky. “The students experienced their first senior night and had an incredible time forming new friendships on and off the courts,” she said.

Belenky said the highlight of the season was their final game against Sharon, which ended in a tie. Commenting in a Tweet after the game, Belenky noted that a “tie basketball game is unheard of, but that was the coolest part of it all.”

“These kids are amazing,” she said. “Rather than going into overtime, they suggested we end the game in a tie and both be Hockomock champions with undefeated seasons. I am so grateful to be their coach!”
