Richard J. “Dick” Dawson, 83, passed away August 31 at the Tippett House in Needham surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Boston, he was raised in Roslindale and spent his summers as a youth in Green Harbor. He graduated from Roslindale High School, attended Boston College, and graduated from Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. He was a medical center specialist for Pfizer Corp. for 36 years before retiring.

A dedicated father, he was active with his three sons, having coached both Canton Little League and Canton Youth Hockey. He has lived in Canton for the last 53 years and enjoyed his summers at the family home in Brewster and spending time with his grandchildren.

Beloved husband for 59 years of M. Patricia (Dwyer). Devoted father of Richard J. Dawson, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Ipswich, David M. Dawson and his wife, Melanie, of Medway, and Mark R. Dawson and his wife, Maryann, of Needham. Brother of the late Charles and Jeanne Dawson. Proud grandfather of Emma, Abigail, and Jack of Ipswich, Andrew, Brendan, Patrick and Emily of Medway, and Nick and Katie of Needham.

A funeral mass was held Thursday in St. Gerard Majella Church in Canton. Burial St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton. Donations may be made in his memory to Boston Children’s Hospital, Thyroid Cancer Program, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA 02115, www.childrenshospital.org/giving. Dick’s legacy is his family; he valued family above all else and instilled those values in his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
