The ninth annual “Cheryl’s Kids” Bake Sale will be held this coming Sunday, May 20, at 557 Pleasant Street, coinciding with the annual Dean S. Luce 5K and Fun Run. Cheryl Isaksen, a Canton resident and daycare provider for over 30 years, has been hosting the bake sale each year with her daycare kids, daycare alumni, and parents.

“I look forward to the bake sale every year — it’s one of my favorite days,” said Isaksen. “I couldn’t do it without all of the kids and families who work so hard to make it happen. It’s amazing to see all of the kids come together for a good cause. Whether it’s baking, helping set up, or managing the donations, the kids are a huge part of the event every year.”

Proceeds from this year’s bake sale will benefit Crohn’s research at Massachusetts General Hospital for Children in support of 9-year-old Liam Doherty, a Canton resident and alumnus of Cheryl’s Daycare. Liam was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at age 6 and his family has worked to raise awareness for the cause with Liam taking the lead. Last year, he hosted “Liam’s Lemonade Stand” and raised $3,397. The money goes to Liam’s doctor and his team who are working to find a cure. In addition to donating money, the center lets Liam decide how the funds he raised will be used.

“I’ve known Liam since he was a baby when he first came to my daycare nine years ago, and I couldn’t be more proud of what a great young man he has become,” said Isaksen. “He has been a part of the bake sale every year and I am honored to be able to support him and be part of his fundraising efforts.”

“Raising money for Crohn’s research is important to me because I want to have more time doing fun things like playing sports and street hockey, and not feeling sick,” said Liam Doherty. “And I want to help other kids from not having to feel sick either.”

Each year, the bake sale proceeds have benefited a different charitable organization. Past beneficiaries include the Canton Food Pantry, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Kids Cancer Buzz-Off benefitting Children’s Hospital, Canton Parks and Recreation Department in honor of Alison Grossman, the Kaleigh Kenyon Memorial Fund, and the Stepping Strong Foundation.

The bake sale began nine years ago with an idea from one of the children in Cheryl’s Daycare. Baked goods and items are donated by friends and daycare families and alumni of the daycare help run the event. Along with the bake sale, Isaksen also has a BBQ, moon bounce, and games for kids throughout the event. All are welcome.

Those who are unable to attend the bake sale but would like to support Liam’s efforts can donate directly by visiting because.massgeneral.org/fundraiser/1108217.
