Montes, Mahoney lead track teams at Hock meet

Several CHS indoor track team members finished among the top 10 in their respective events at the Hockomock League Championships held Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston. Out of 12 teams, the Canton boys finished 10th overall while the girls tied with Attleboro for 11th place.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Marquise Montes, who placed fifth in the 55-meter dash (6.86 seconds) and 10th in the long jump. Also placing in the top 10 for the boys were Cordel Smith in the high jump (6th, 5’8”), John Guenthner in the 55m hurdles (7th, 8.41), and Jack Healey in the mile (10th, 4:53.26).

Other top performers for the boys team included: Cam Sanchez, 55m, 12th, 6.94; Matt Floyd, 55m hurdles, 18th, 9.10; Guenthner, 300m, 18th, 40.12; Gerry Sullivan, 600m, 14th, 1:33.55; Mike Mazzola, 1,000m, 26th, 2:59.61; Jack Hernon, mile, 24th, 5:13.69; Steve Brady, high jump, 18th, 5’6”; and Floyd, long jump, 22nd, 16’11”.

On the girls’ side, top 10 finishers included Bronwyn Mahoney, who placed sixth in the shot put (30’6.75”); Jimisha Williams, who placed eighth in the 55m dash (7.68); and Chloe Pennacchio, who finished 10th in the mile (5:53.01).

Other top finishers for the girls included Claire Belisle, who finished 21st in both the 55m hurdles (10.04) and 300m (47.04); Rosana Cho, who placed 23rd in the long jump (13’6”) and 24th in the 300m (47.84); and Leah Murphy, who took 19th in the long jump (13’9.75”) and 25th in the 300m (47.94). Rounding out the top-30 placements for the girls were Maggie Dunn, 24th in the 600m (1:56.29), Kayla Wong, 26th in the 1,000m (3:48.84), and Ally Chin, 28th in the 1,000m (3:50.98).

Qualifying members of both CHS teams were due to compete in the Division 4 championships on Wednesday, February 14. Expected participants included Williams, Belisle and Mahoney for the girls and Montes, Smith, Sanchez, Guenthner, Healey, and Riley McDonnell for the boys.
