Lt. Charles Rae and SROs Ensley Cotard and Jonathan McCourt present at a recent Success Express meeting.

The Canton Police Department gave a presentation to the Success Express business group at Blue Hill Country Club on Thursday, November 9. Lt. Charles Rae and school resource officers Ensley Cotard and Jonathan McCourt explained how they team up with school administrators and staff to improve safety. They shared details on protocols and drills that prepare students for incidents in school that would require it to “lock-down” or students to shelter in place.

Officer Cotard works on site at Canton High School and Officer McCourt works at the Galvin Middle School. The officers outlined the many benefits of building a relationship with a student before he or she needs to connect with an officer regarding a specific situation. Cotard and McCourt said that establishing their role as a resource for students has proved to be incredibly helpful in preventing issues. When an issue does arise, officers are typically able to get involved quickly to stop it from escalating into something more serious.

Success Express is a business networking group that meets in Canton. The group hosts social gatherings for its members, invites community organizations to present at meetings, and donates to local nonprofits.
