Sparked by the performances of senior captains Jack Goyetch, Danny Powers, and Joey Vaughan, the Canton High varsity golf team opened the season with three straight wins and a busy first week of play.

The Bulldogs kicked things off last Monday with a 155-166 road victory over Milford at Hopedale Country Club, followed by another road win over Stoughton (152-185) two days later at Easton Country Club. The team then closed out the perfect week on Thursday with a 155-166 win over Foxboro in their home opener.

“Our three captains are playing great golf right now and have scoring averages near the top of the league,” noted head coach Mike Barucci. “Chris Lavoie has also been impressive and has factored into all three matches. Tommy Dimock played well this week and has improved in each match, factoring into the scoring in our third match. Bubba McNeice, Niko Donovan and Ryan Nolte also played in all three matches this week and continued to improve each match.”

Against Milford, Goyetch was the match medalist with a score of 37, followed by Vaughan with a score of 38 and Powers and Lavoie, who both shot a 40. “This was [Lavoie’s] first ever match and his score factored in the win,” said Barucci. “This was a big league win for us. We lost to Milford at their course last year. There are some challenging holes at their course and we handled them well.”

In the win over Stoughton, Powers and Joey Vaughan were co-medalists with a score of 37, while Goyetch and Lavoie both shot a 39.

Canton’s chief rival in the Davenport Division over the past few years has been Foxboro, and the Bulldogs ended the week with an 11-shot win at their home course at Blue Hill Country Club.

Powers and Vaughan were co-medalists for the second match in a row, shooting a 38. Goyetch followed at 39, and Lavoie and Dimock both shot a 40.

“We played well, but can definitely do better on our home course,” said Barucci.

This week, the CHS golfers were due to host another tough division foe, North Attleboro, on Wednesday at Blue Hill CC. The squad will then travel to Heather Hills Country Club on Monday, September 25, for a rematch against North Attleboro followed by a home match next Thursday against Milford starting at 3 p.m.
