Celebrating Irish culture in America’s most Irish state

A two-day festival of Irish arts and culture is taking place in Canton this weekend as the nation’s most Irish state presents an in-depth celebration of modern Irish culture, music and dance featuring some of the nation’s best Irish performers.

“The mission is to give people a true sense of what it means to be Irish here in New England,” said Seamus Mulligan, ICCNE president. “The activities during festival week will create a sense of this region’s rich Irish roots. The festival during the weekend features dozens of the finest musicians, singers, dancers, writers, and cultural advocates you’re likely to see in one setting.”

World-renowned Irish performers like the Wolfe Tones — the “storytellers of Ireland,” celebrating their 50th anniversary — will be joined by John McDermott, who has recorded more than 25 solo CDs, including three platinum, one double platinum, and one triple platinum CD. McDermott is also a philanthropist and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Bob Hope Award for his dedication to veterans’ causes.

Many other stars from other musical traditions will also perform, according to festival co-producers Pat McDonough and Ciaran Nagle, founder of the Three Irish Tenors, including: The Stunning, a very successful Irish rock band from the West of Ireland; Mundy, an Irish singer-songwriter who crosses traditional Irish music with Irish rock (he played recently for President Barack Obama on his last tour of Ireland); and Cillian Vallely, a member of the fantastic traditional Irish music group Lunasa.

The Irish Wolfhounds Association will display its fine assortment of dogs. The Gaelic Athletic Association will showcase a variety of Irish sports games. In addition to the cultural activities, the festival has numerous vendors selling authentic Irish products, food and beverages, and activities for children and families. The 46-acre Irish Cultural Center campus also provides plenty of free parking and handicap-accessible facilities.

Prepaid tickets at reduced prices are available at www.IrishFestBoston.com.

This year’s festival will also feature a kids tent, which will reflect the vibrant and rich culture of Ireland. Activities include jiving and waltzing lessons for kids, Irish set dancing for kids, an engineering project, and Irish-style stories on Irish mythical and historical figures. There will also be demonstrations on Viking culture, craft and combat, and an Irish movie will be shown each evening on an outdoor movie screen.
