CHS swimmers earn double win vs. MansfieldBy Jay Turner
Coming off a tough road loss to Westwood in a mixed-gender meet a few days prior, both Canton High swim teams got back to their winning ways with a double victory last Wednesday at home over Mansfield.
The boys won handily, 98-70, and remained unbeaten against Hockomock League schools while improving to 5-2 overall. The girls scored a 91-79 win and now sit at 4-3 overall.
In last week’s meet against the Hornets, Canton’s Sebastian Melendez, a defending two-time state champion, competed with an injury restriction — he had to start in the water rather than start with a dive — but still managed to win both the 200 IM and 500 free (state-qualifying time). He was also part of two winning relays: the 200 medley along with Sean Mitchell, Matt Gilmore and Diego Ferstler, and the 400 free relay along with Mitchell, Adrian Bankowski and Owen Guerini.
Other winners for the boys on Wednesday included Bankowski in the 50 free (state-qualifying time), Guerini in the 100 free, Mitchell in the 100 breaststroke, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Ferstler, Gilmore, Bankowski and Guerini.
On the girls’ side, the lady Bulldogs emerged victorious despite missing 10 swimmers due to illness and prior school commitments. Winners included Maddie Nourse in the 50 free and 100 butterfly, Brianna Gilchrist in the 500 free, Brianna Mitchell in the 100 backstroke, and Briana Murphy in the 100 breaststroke. The 200 medley relay team of Murphy, Mitchell, Nourse and Gilchrist also placed first in the meet, as did the 200 free relay team of Murphy, Rebecca Guerrero, Ericka Feeney and Gilchrist.
Both teams were scheduled to host Milford on Wednesday and will travel to Ashland for a nonleague meet tomorrow, January 20.
