Bradley Estate offering snowshoeing tours, hands-on workshops

By

This month, the Trustees of Reservations is celebrating winter with a series of unique activities taking place at the historic Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate on Washington Street in Canton.

Families can visit the estate Sundays in January from 1-3 p.m. to explore the beautiful garden paths on snowshoes. Spend 30 minutes learning about different styles of snowshoes before making tracks. Children ages 5-10 will have fun searching for friendly snowmen along the way. Bring your own snowshoes or borrow the estate’s (plan to sign up early to reserve a pair as they go quickly). The cost for each session is $9 for adult members, $15 for adult nonmembers, and $5 for children.

On Saturday, January 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the estate will host a Sheep to Shawl: Fiber Workshop featuring instructor Betty Alspach. Alspach has taught fiber workshops for many years and will share how wool is transformed from raw fleece on sheep to handspun yarn. The workshop includes hands-on demonstrations of washing, carding, and combing fiber to prepare it for spinning, felting, rug hooking, and weaving. $12 members/$20 nonmembers.

Looking for a creative way to hone your photography skills? Visit the Bradley Estate on Wednesday, January 25, from 1-3 p.m. to learn techniques for taking historically inspired photographs from photographers Carol MacGregor and Susan Licht. Titled “A Labor of Love: 19th Century Styled Photography,” the workshop will show participants how to develop a plan for a historic-styled shoot, rig up a backdrop and create a scene (choosing models, costumes, furniture, etc.), collect research on the era, and photograph flat lay design. MacGregor and Licht will also share their personal experiences photographing John Singer Sargent-inspired themes at the estate. $9 members/$15 nonmembers.

Other seasonal events include a six-week Balance & Breath Gentle Yoga series (Tuesdays until January 27, 10 to 11:15 a.m., $9 members/$15 nonmembers), a Winter Care of Your Indoor Plants workshop (January 26, 1-3 p.m.), and tours of the estate featuring hot cider (Thursday, January 12 and 13, 1-3 p.m., $5 members/$10 nonmembers/free for children).

Call 508-636-4693 ext. 5003 or email bradley@thetrustees.org to register for events, and check the Trustees website at thetrustees.org for a complete listing of upcoming events.
