News Notes: 2 Canton families displaced by fire

By

Two families at the Arboretum apartments off Route 138 were displaced as a result of a stove fire on Thursday, September 1, around noon. No one was injured and firefighters were able to rescue and evacuate three cats. Seventeen firefighters in all, including firefighters from Stoughton, responded and remained on scene for nearly two hours. Fire Lt. Greg Woodbury said the apartment on the third floor, where the fire started, suffered the most smoke and water damage with the second floor unit directly underneath also suffering water damage. Woodbury said the fire extended to the kitchen cabinets but firefighters were able to contain it to the kitchen. Firefighters returned to a different building in the Arboretum complex later in the day for a water leak, but Woodbury said there was no connection to the earlier fire.

Busy week for Canton firefighters

In a busy week for Canton’s emergency responders, firefighters doused a brush fire behind 1047 Turnpike Street and responded to a one-car crash on Washington Street, a gas leak at a construction site on Rockland Street, and a small deck fire on Pleasant Circle.

On August 29, firefighters found a brush, tires and trash burning behind Canton Auto Clinic on Turnpike Street. Eight firefighters responded, and Lt. Greg Woodbury said some of them were treated for poison ivy exposure. Also on August 29, around 2 p.m., firefighters were called to an accident on Washington Street in which a vehicle struck a utility pole. The driver refused medical treatment. The pole was broken at the base, but firefighters reported no downed wires.

On Thursday, September 1, shortly before noon, a construction crew hit a gas line at 152 Rockland Street. Gas and electricity were shut off in the home. Firefighters checked area homes for gas leaks but found none. Firefighters also responded to a truck rollover at the junction of I-93 and I-95 on September 5 around 5:45 p.m. and transported one injured party to Norwood Hospital for treatment. In one unusual call last week, firefighters responded to an apartment on Indian Woods Way for a suspicious odor and found the origin to be a burning sock in a lamp.
