Song’s record time paces XC team to first meet win

It was a great week for CHS senior runner Catherine “Cat” Song as she set a new course record while helping the girls cross country team defeat Milford (25-34) for its first meet win of the year.

Song also finished 10th overall in the Reebok Canton 5K on Sunday and was the first female runner to cross the finish line. (See related story).

In the Milford meet, Song continued to state her case for the title of best runner in the Hock, placing first overall in 17:57 and shattering the old course record of 19:26. She was followed by Olivia Stevens in fourth place (22:13), Ally Chin, fifth (22:21), Emily Orkin, seventh (22:35), and Margaret Polsgrove, eighth (22:54).

Head cross country coach David Hiltz said the times improved greatly from last week. “Part of it is getting in the groove of racing, and the girls’ comfort level with the Pequitside Farm course showed,” Hiltz said. “They ran well and we hope to build off of this momentum.”

The boys team also came close to winning its first meet but fell short by six points, 25-31. The highlight for the boys was a new course record set by senior Mark Clancy, who placed first overall with a time of 16:08.

Sophomore Jack Healey was next for Canton in fourth place (17:09), followed by senior captain Courtland Priest in sixth (17:41), Thomas Cahill, ninth (18:04), and Andrew Salvatori, 11th (18:27).

“I am proud of the way [the boys] ran today,” Hiltz said. “They ran smart. We knew this meet would be close and it played out that way. Unfortunately, it didn’t play out in our favor.”

Both teams were due to travel to Stoughton on October 6 and Foxboro on October 13.
