Eight school employees retired at the end of this past school year: Marilyn Capone, a Galvin Middle School reading teacher, after 38 years of service; Luce kindergarten teacher Margaret Sullivan after 29 years; JFK nurse Susan Rogers after 19 years; Barbara Stephens, administrative assistant to the school business manager, after 17 years; Luce third grade teacher Elizabeth Pomfred after 11 years; CHS part-time nurse Eileen Cerne after seven years; CHS German teacher Donna Treece after five years; and Susan McGowan, longtime administrative assistant to the school superintendent.

According to the School Department, all 193 registrants who applied for full-day kindergarten received a slot for next year. Twenty-four students opted for half-day kindergarten and will be enrolled at the Dean S. Luce School. There are also 24 students who may have to go to a school out of their home district to receive the full day of kindergarten.

Jim Spillane will be the new Galvin Middle School assistant principal beginning in September, replacing Meredith Carey, who is leaving to run a fitness center.

Sarah Collmer, Kennedy School principal and former K-12 performing arts coordinator, is leaving the Canton school system to take a principal position in Lincoln.

As we know, School Superintendent Jeff Granatino will leave Canton to become the Marshfield school superintendent and will be replaced by Jen Henderson, director of curriculum and instruction. Henderson will be Canton’s interim superintendent for a year while a search committee looks for a permanent replacement.

The comprehensive search committee will include the police chief, a member of the Board of Selectmen, a representative of the Finance Committee, parents, students, current administrators, and teachers.

The renovation of the CHS tennis courts is underway and the courts will remain closed to the public through the summer and into the fall until it is completed …
