CHS baseball wins 3 straight behind Jerrier, Doyle

It was one of the most successful weeks in recent years for the CHS varsity baseball team as the Bulldogs improved to 6-3 with an extra-inning win over Sharon and shutouts of league opponents Attleboro and Franklin.

The week started off with a dramatic, 6-5 road win over Sharon that featured a three-run seventh inning, sparked by a Joe Peccia triple. Canton then went on to post back-to-back 4-0 shutouts of Attleboro and Franklin, led by junior pitchers Griffin Jerrier and Sean Doyle.

Doyle got his first career varsity win in relief on Monday before he pitched a complete-game shutout Friday against the Panthers. In between, Jerrier pitched a complete-game shutout of his own, recording nine strikeouts in his seven innings of work. Jerrier also had a hit in all three games, going 5 for 12 and raising his average to .273 for the season.

Meanwhile, Peccia and Kevin Powers both extended their hit streaks to six games as Powers raised his average to .484 while Peccia improved to .423 with a .622 on-base percentage. Powers pitched 5 1/3 innings against Sharon, getting a no-decision but leaving Canton in position for a late victory.

In Friday’s game, Doyle was dominant on the mound, scattering four hits, walking one and striking out a batter. Jerrier went 2 for 3 with an RBI triple; Powers hit an inside-the-park homerun; Peccia reached base three times and scored two runs; and Steve Bonica had a sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs have a four-game week ahead of them and are set up well with plenty of healthy arms after the consecutive complete games by Jerrier and Doyle. Head coach JP Scott credits his team with being “a bunch of players who motivate each other” and who have found their roles on the team.

The Bulldogs were due to travel to Mansfield on Monday and Taunton on Tuesday, followed by a home game Thursday (today) versus Foxboro and an away game Saturday against Cardinal Spellman.
